Ministry of Education holds anti-drug campaign

BANGKOK, 19 August 2012 (NNT) – Mr. Suchart Thada-Thamrongvech, Minister of Education, presided over the opening ceremony of an event that seeks to help Thai children overcome drugs. The ceremony was held at Supachalasai Stadium. The Education Minister was joined by Mr. Chinnapat Bhumirat, Secretary General of the Office of the Basic Education Commission.

The Minister of Education led those assembled at the stadium, in a pledge to overcome drugs. The pledge was made before a picture of His Majesty the King. Over 10,000 students from schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission took part in a procession that transformed itself into an image of the Thai flag. The students also took part in a campaign walk to promote anti-drug awareness around the Pathumwan area.

Awards were given to school administrators involved in anti-drug campaigns, and there were activities from various agencies and performances by youth participants in the “To Be Number One” campaign as well as numerous celebrities.

327 years of Thailand-France relations celebrated in Ayutthaya

AYUTTHAYA, 19 August 2012 (NNT) – Thailand’s ancient capital of Ayutthaya has been celebrating more than 3 centuries of the country’s good relations with France.

Ayutthaya Governor Wittaya Phewpong said on Sunday that the province has planned to hold a big celebration to commemorate 327 years of good relations between Thailand and France.

Mr. Wittaya said that the event is set to take place during August 24th-26th, at the province’s old City Hall.

He added that the highlights of the celebration are the revisiting to a beautiful and cool Paris with the infusion of Thainess from the era of Ayutthaya, a Lido performance and a Moulin-Rouge show, joined by world-leading actors.

He said that France’s landmark monuments, including the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, will be recreated for photograph opportunities, while fake snow will also be created to make the experience more impressive.

The Ayutthaya Governor added that a special concert by one of Thailand’s country singers and a number of traditional musical performances as well as a variety of Thai foods will be showcased throughout the event.

Hat Yai tourism vibrant during Hari Raya holiday

SONGKHLA, Aug 19- Malaysian tourists have been flocking to this Thai southern province's Hat Yai district to celebrate the Muslim Hari Raya holiday which was projected to generate some Bt100 revenue.

Thanks to vibrant tourism in this southern commercial district during the Hari Raya, hotel rooms have been fully booked, while vendors have been preparing their goods for attracting travelers.

Local tourism business operators projected that the post-Ramadan celebration would result in approximately Bt100 million in circulation.

Meanwhile, Songkhla Provincial Police chief Suwit Chernsiri instructed relevant officials to tighten security for the Hari Raya until the end of the Muslim holiday period.

About 17 checkpoints were set up on inbound roads connecting Hat Yai district, while 45 checkpoints were set up in surrounding areas.

In addition, authorities were on foot patrol in prime business district, downtown Hat Yai and other at-risk areas around the clock.

Pol Maj Gen Suwit expressed confidence that the security measures would help rebuild confidence among tourists. (MCOT online news)

PHUKET: Patong Police Superintendent Jirapat Phochanaphan this afternoon confirmed to the Phuket Gazette that police were now investigating at least three more missing persons now suspected of being victims of the Tiger Discotheque fire that killed four people early Friday morning.
