Sorry, I couldnt think of one so I thought I would just assume if you were married, they might give you a better parking space.

I have no idea what you're on about?

Have you been on the sauce?

No mate, I am married, and I dont see a benefit of registering my marriage at my embassy. I had to get an affirmation to marry doc signed off by them to get married, but I dont remember registering our marriage with them. Sorry if my attempt at humor missed the mark widely.

What Embassy is key as many do not even have such an option. Embassy involvement is normally only providing the character letter required for a foreigner to register marriage here.

Having your marriage registered with the registar in your country makes it easier to get proof of your marriage if required in your country.

Strictly speaking it is not necesarry, as a certified copy of the original marriage certificate (with translation) will also be accpeted. So it might be a convienience, but nothing more.

Thanks for the clarity.

It may make the processing of a Last Will & Testament slightly quicker after your demise, but that is about it.

I have heard some expats make mutterings about the legality of a marriage, which for most nationalities is complete nonsense. Married at an amphur, you're married, end of.

There is the convenience of being able to obtain duplicate documentation at any time in the future from the UK's General Registrar Office.

That's about it really.

wai.gif Assuming you are a U.S. citizen, and later have children by that marriage registering your marriage at the U.S. embessy can help with:

* Documenting your child's dual citizenship (proof of U.S. parent and place of birth)

* U.S. income tax (proving your child is legal tax deduction dependent)

* Social Security survivor's benefits (If you die before your child reaches legal age and is still in school).

And other legal matters.

May sound like meaningless junk now....but having just that legal notice of registration of your child's birth...and your legal marriage...can make a big difference in your child's later life...and also your wife's right to some benefits from Social Security as your legal survivor.

Also...if you are later divorced from your Thai wife....be sure to register that divorce with the U.S. embessy.

Otherwise you'll be up s**t creek if later you want to get remarried again in Thailand.

"It is not a legal requirement that you have your Thai marriage certificate deposited with the General Register Office (GRO) in the UK.

According to the UK Border Agency in Bangkok, if you marry a Thai national, he or she will require a visa to visit or settle in the UK. Please note that applicants are not required to submit a GRO certified marriage certificate with their UK visa application. The UKBA, Bangkok will accept original Thai marriage certificates as proof of marriage, if accompanied with a certified translation".
