On August 23, 2012, a ceremony was held to commemorate the building of an artificial reef with discarded electrical equipment. To create the reef, more than 2,400 expired high-voltage electric “cups” will be dropped into the ocean to sink to the bottom of the sea floor off the coast of Sattahip. The structures will form the base for marine organisms and serve as a habitat for small marine life. The chairman of the ceremony was Mr. Suthon Boonprasong, the representative of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). He officially consigned the electric cups to Vice Admiral Phongsak Phureeroj, the Commissioner of Marine Corps, Navy.
