Sattahip Artificial Reef Created To Honor Queen Sirikit

SATTAHIP:--The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) joined with the Navy to build an artificial coral reef, sinking used electric parts to the sea floor to show respect to Queen Siritkit.

On August 23, 2012, a ceremony was held to commemorate the building of an artificial reef with discarded electrical equipment.

To create the reef, more than 2,400 expired high-voltage electric “cups” will be dropped into the ocean to sink to the bottom of the sea floor off the coast of Sattahip. The structures will form the base for marine organisms and serve as a habitat for small marine life.

The chairman of the ceremony was Mr. Suthon Boonprasong, the representative of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). He officially consigned the electric cups to Vice Admiral Phongsak Phureeroj, the Commissioner of Marine Corps, Navy.

Mr. Suthon said that EGAT had joined with Navy to build the structure of artificial coral reef to celebrate and show respect to Queen Sirikit on her 80th birthday.

Both organizations recognized the problem of conserving the ocean environment, so EGAT donated the expired cups of high voltage electricity to consign to the Marine Corps to build the artificial coral reef, in accordance with the Royal project.
