Airline Passengers Flying Into Thailand To Get Fake-Goods Warning

Passengers to get fake-goods warning

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Airline passengers flying into Thailand will soon receive on-board warnings against bringing counterfeit products into the Kingdom, otherwise they risk being fined and seeing their goods confiscated.

The move is part of a serious crackdown on counterfeit and pirated goods.

Commercial airlines will be required to warn their passengers that carrying counterfeit products into the Kingdom is a violation of Thai copyright law and subject to punishment.

The Commerce Ministry’s Intellectual Property Department, in cooperation with the Transport Ministry's Civil Aviation Department, will impose the requirement on commercial airlines.

Pajchima Tanasanti, director-general of the Intellectual Property Department, said yesterday that the ban would cover products that violate intellectual property rights.

The department will also ask the Customs Department and the Information and Communications Technology Ministry to amend concerned laws for better suppression of fake products.

The ICT Ministry will also focus more on blocking websites that sell fake or pirated products.

Time for another Minister to get his name in the newspapers just before Cabinet reshuffle time. They make it so blindingly obvious its silly.

What they have not thought through, whether they like it or not is that tourists world-wide come here knowing they can get their fake rolex or LV handbag and the wording of such a strong warning really will scare tourists away from coming. This is a really really bad move when tourism has suffered and they are trying to give it a boost. It will suit the crap advertising campaign they have come up with for Thailand on the TV, not even close to matching India or Malaysia.

They may not do fake goods overtly in many countries but they dont give you a warning when you are on short finals that will scare half the tourist population on an aircraft to death. Stupid, stupid! Another example of engaging mouth before brain!

Wouldn't a warning against buying counterfeits in Thailand, and then taking them home to Farangland, be more relevant ? rolleyes.gif

Hilarious

Either way it's the stupidest policy ever enabled or the journalist completely misunderstood the entire story.

Take your pick.

cheesy.gif You can't make this stuff up. The knock-off capital of the world is sending a message for no one to try and muscle in on their market.

There can only be one response to this.....cheesy.gif

I have to admit that is a good one. I like the comments about protecting the Thai counterfeiters. I bet China could or will or has tried to muscle in on that.

I particularly liked, that the announcement will be made when the plane is inbound to Thailand, and it's already too late to leave at home, one's French/Italian/British knock-offs of famous Thai products ! laugh.png

I think someone left out the SATIRE.

Or maybe they are worried that Lady Gaga is planning to bring her fake Rolex's with her next time.

Half the government officials could lose their laptop.

If they can do this, then why don't they give a a warning about the Jet Ski's

As mentioned by posters, it is bringing the counterfeit products OUT OF THE KINGDOM that is the problem

Nothing to be scared of. The warning is about bringing fakes into the country, not out of the country

Yes, I think this is more for China contries more than a farang issue

A warning about the jet ski mafias, gem scams etc.would be much more appropriate!

The more tourists who are forewarned, the more chance of these crooks shrivelling up.

A lot of the counterfeit goods on sale here are actually from China, not Thailand, and transported in by plane. This isn't about people flying from Europe or the US. So laugh it up but it is actually useful if it ends up being enforced and they start confiscating goods

Lots of fake LV bags here.

It is like a must for every uni girl from ramkhamphueng or all the ratjapha to own a fake LV or Gucci hand bag.

Would someone really bring a suitcase of fake goods in from China to sell here? Wouldn't they bring them in by container? Or even over land borders. It would be much cheaper and easier with the volume.

thats exactly what richard littlejohn would sayclap2.gif

Jet Ski scam, Gem shops and Temple's being closed I think would be more appropriate. When I first came to Thailand a tuk-tuk guy told me MBK was closed haha.

If they can do this, then why don't they give a a warning about the Jet Ski's

I've never seen anyone bring a fake jet ski into Thailand ;p

Yes, it's a Bond Street silk knock-off, of a Baan Nawk original polyester. biggrin.png

Can you imagine a plane load of long time travellers to Thailand, and their reaction to the announcement? The laughter will be heard in the cockpit.
