Driving across the old Iron Bridge this afternoon, it looks like the Dukes River Market restaurant is setting up for another large fireworks display next to the Ping River.

As the 4th of July fireworks and food were really good, I'd love to attend whatever is being celebrated this time. Anyone have any details?

With this being the peak of the rainy season and you wouldnt want to setup fireworks outdoors too far in advance, I am guessing that they are set to go tonight? Not sure what the occasion might be. My best guess is US Labor Day?

Anyway, any details would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

I know there's a big birthday party this evening with a galaxy or space travel dress theme. It's private invite only and gonna be pretty fancy and with a bunch of the town's usual hi-so turnouts. It's also gonna be faaaabulous from the details I've heard. I'd just stake out some location nearby if you really wanna watch. Party pix will likely be up in City Now in a day or two.

Btw.... I knew it was going to be by the river, but had no idea it was at the Marketplace - thought it was gonna be at a private residence..... so I'd only put a 90% certainty on my answer.

Could have some thing to do with Chinese. They had firecrackers during the day at the Lo Khro Chinese Temple.

When is Chinese New Year?

Not until February next year.

Yesterday was Chinese half Year, yes lots of firecrackers going off from early morning all over Thailand. many Chinese did not work, same every year.

When is the Moon Festival? Chinese celebrate that.

I somehow doubt they're celebrating US Labour Day, or even Show Day on the Gold Coast: maybe it's just the joy of the first day of Autumn? Spring if you're the other side of the equator. smile.png

A nice display seen from high up in the city.

Moon Festival/Mid-Autumn Festival/Mooncake Festival is September 30 for 2012. I've been trying to find any references to half-year festivals with no luck. Will check with my wife if she is familiar with it.

Chinese Ghost Festival - Aug 31, 2012

On Sart Chin Day, the three realms of Heaven, Hell and the Earth open up for a whole month so that spirits can roam the earth in search of food and entertainment. People organize food offering ceremonies at home to make merit, and also distribute food and other necessities for those in need.

Also called I am told Chinese 1/2 year. in the Village we had many firecrackers let off and people swapped food, myself was given trays of fruit by 2 houses, been the same for the passed 8 years
