MAE HONG SON, Sept 15- A landslide triggered by heavy overnight rain has blocked a road in Mae Hong Son’s Sop Moei district, suspending road travel Saturday morning, while forest run-off has severely damaged three villages in Lampang.

Overnight incessant heavy rain caused soil on the mountainside to slide across the Mae Sariang-Chiang Mai highway in Moei district and vehicles cannot use the road, Papong subdistrict official La Boonyuang said.

Responding to the ongoing situation, Mr La coordinated with government agencies to clear and reopen the blocked road and let road traffic resume as normal.

In Lampang, another northern province, forest run-off due to heavy downpours hit the reservoir and overflowed into three villages, affecting about 100 households.

Currently, Sermsak Khiewkham, Ton Thong Chai subdistrict municipality chied, instructed officials to speed up assisting affected villagers and to keep monitoring the situation as the water level continued rising. (MCOT online news)

YALA, Sept 15 -- Three paramilitary ranger volunteers, one woman, killed in Yala roadside ambush by presumed insurgents as they traveled to market in a pickup truck.

After the killing their vehicle was set afire.

Yala provincial police were alerted at about 6am and rushed to the scene at Than Nampheung school in the Yala provincial seat. Responding firefighters put out the blaze of the red Toyota Mighty X pickup.

Four bodies, the three volunteers from the 41th regiment based in Yala's Raman district and a housemaid working for the 41th regiment were found near the vehicle.

About one hundred M16, AK47, 9mm and shotgun cartridges were found scattered on the road.

A ranger who witnessed the incident told police that he had driven his motorcycle from the base, accompanying the four victims to market to buy food.

He was a half kilometre ahead of his companions and found many triangle spikes on the road in front of Than Nampheung Shool. He turned back to warn his friends, but heard shots before arriving at their vehicle.

He found that his companions and the base housemaid were killed and the truck was burning.

Police believe there were at least five insurgents involved in the attack, possibly hidden at the roadside bush before the attack.

Weapons belonging to the victims were carried away by the assailants before they set fire to the truck. (MCOT online news)

Dengue fever situation in Buriram still a concern

BURIRAM, 15 September 2012 (NNT) - Dr. Sompong Jarungjittanusont, Public Health Officer of Buriram province, says that the dengue fever situation in the area is still cause for concern.

This year’s rainy season has seen heavy rains and floods in many areas, creating the conditions for the disease to spread faster. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 1,672 dengue patients seeking treatment at hospitals throughout the province. Of this number, one died.

Most patients are in the age range of 5 to 10 years. The second most afflicted age group is those aged between 10 and 14 years. The disease is spreading fast in five districts, namely Chamni, Noan Suwan, Lam Plaimat, Nang Rong and Khu Muang.

Health stations in every district have been instructed to spray chemicals to destroy breeding grounds of mosquitoes. Prime Minister urged to deal directly with corruption

BANGKOK, 15 September 2012 (NNT) - Mr. Ongart Klampaiboon, a Democrat Party list Member of Parliament, has called on the Prime Minister to open a direct channel to receive information on suspicious corrupt practices among politicians and government officials.

Mr. Ongart indicated that the Opposition as well as many other agencies have constantly unveiled evidences on fraudulent actions committed by some politicians and civil servants. Those reports involve such government projects as flood prevention and the rice pledging scheme.

Mr. Ongart urged that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra allow those complaints to be directly forwarded to her, and that she take accountable any official units and politicians involved in the frauds.

He believed that if the complaints were directed to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) for investigation, the units would only complicate the cases.
