I'm thinking of having a operation at the Queen Sirikit Hospital next month using a Surgeon from a top private Hospital in Pattaya .. anyone know what the after care is like please .. and the private rooms ..

Assuming they have any private rooms available then there are some very nice rooms down to the normal rooms.

The after care depends on where the Surgeon is going to check up on you?

Will it be in his private practice or at the hospital?

Are you convenient to that hospital?

I have used it many times myself and for my father but never for surgery however they do have a good reputation etc.

Why not ask at the hospital?

Booking your private room in advance is the way to go or you will end up wherever is space. Take your own caretaker with you ( can stay in your room ) nurse and nurseaid are quite busy.

Btw, your Doc is from the Sirikit Hospital, he/she is only doing shorttime at the Top Private Hospitals...

They have a big market once a week in the hospital grounds. I had a new Swiss computer IV but no one knew how to use it. My AC didn't work right for a week. They insisted on daily payment (So I went out the ATM with my mobile Swiss IV). Food was not good. But other than that it was fine.

The Surgeon only work's there thursday for clinic and does surgery on monday's so i guess i won't see much of him as he will be at the private hospitals the rest of the week ..

i will have my wife with me but she is no Nurse or Dr even tho she should have good experience having looked after me why i was in Chonburi hospital for 4 months ..

I recommend QS, have had operation (tumors in bladder), I chose a ward bed rather than private room as I was paying not insurance, pre and post visits with surgeon 4 days 3 nights total cost B30,000. That was including 50% surcharge for Farang (disclosed right up front). very satisfied, same thing 4 years earlier in Bumrungrad cost me B200,000.

What I saw was young doctors. They tell me top of the class and they do it for experience because the hospital has a very large number of patients. Also it is not really public as owned by the Navy. Maybe someone knows more about that. They do a lot of insurance stuff with companies.

The doctor who operated on me told me he was free. I only paid for the room, meds and so on. I assumed Navy. (Navy the doctor, not me)

Not 100% sure but I think it is something to do with the Medical Association here in Thailand where they have to put in a certain amount of hospital hours per year. Pro Bono maybe?

ALL the hospitals ask for someone to be with you while in hospital,here in thailand,my son was born at Q/SIRA,my wife and daughter,have stayed their as wel....the private rooms are big and nice .not the bkk pat,hosp,rooms but good,i think there are 2 standards for private,yes it has markets [weds] resturants,coffee,shops,mart, it is govt navy run so they take lunch breaks,,weekends off,etc,I always tell the mrs if something happens to me throw me in the car and get me to Q.S as quick a poss,it has intensive care and caters for hearts att/strokes.the only other hospital in pattaya for that is BKK PAT/H.and if u dont have your visa or insured they will kick u out.

the staff there at Q.S are great too..good luck

My doctor in Rayong said they don't do heart stuff like stents. Do you know something he does not or who do we ask?

I don't think it is the same. Q Sirikit is owned and staffed by the Navy. There is a Sattahip government hospital across the street around Kilo Sip. Sirikit also does insurance work for private companies. And, have you ever been in a public hospital that had a sign "Farang + 50%?"

right. I was in three weeks ago at the PIH and they were very surprised that my wife would not stay with me all the time "to take care me". I told then the nurses that this is their job, while my wife goes after HER job and comes to visit me when she has time to do so.

No, I didn't get on well with them afterwards. It got worse when my wife had a yapyap with them upon her visit

I have two friends that both made hernia operations at Queen Sirikit. They were both very satisfied. BUT they both say bring a person who speaks thai with You.

That's what i have but mine is not normal it's massive my stomach is the size of a football .. in London they told me i need pig skin installed not a mesh and also plastic surgery to make my musles strong again .. what sort of hernia's did your friends have done please

Well i've been to Queen Sirikit hospital a few weeks ago, and wanted to have gastroscopy performed on an 8 year old,which they weren't able to as they don't have the instruments for it.

When asked where I could have it done they went through all government hospitals and concluded that Chulalongkorn would be the only one between Sattahip and bangkok.

I'm almost sure that Banglamung also charges a premium for foreigners, though they don't have the sign up.

Also the signs outside look very similar to those at Banglamung.Both have those same large signs " Emergency " at the entrances of the parking lot.

Maybe I said it wrong and maybe you can correct me but I don't think Q S is a part of the 30 baht thing. I think they are cheap for Thai people but not free like the other Thai government hospitals. And again maybe I am nuts but I think all of the doctors and nurses work for the Navy.

I saw a doctor there last month and during the examination he called in another surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic surgery. Not sure whether or not the first doctor works solely at Queen Sirikit Hospital, but the specialist who is going to perform surgery on me next week said that he could do it at the naval hospital or at the private hospital where he also worked. Since it was not an emergency, I had to wait several weeks for the surgery to be scheduled at QS, but it could have been done sooner (and more expensively) at the private hospital.

I got the impression that the fees charged by the surgeon would have been the same or nearly the same at either hospital, but the hospital's charges at QS were considerably less.

I also confirmed a reservation for a VIP room. It was made clear that that meant someone would have to stay with me 24/7. If I wanted to be monitored continuously by the nursing staff then I would need to stay in a ward.

Registration cost me Baht 20 and the consult with the two surgeons, both of whom spoke excellent English, which lasted nearly an hour cost Baht 200. Not sure what the charges would have been if I were Thai, but clearly what I paid was less than the cost. The charges for the surgery and hospital stay will be 1/2 to 1/3 of what they would have been at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and 1/4 to 1/8 of what is typical in the US.

In another, older thread some posters were going on and on about how "they" didn't want farang there and that farang were not treated nicely. I found everyone to be exceedingly friendly, helpful and accommodating. Aside from the two doctors most of the nurses and office staff appeared to be Naval personnel with limited to no English (it is after all a Thai military facility), but since I was accompanied by a Thai friend, the language issue posed no problem.

I'm sure in most countries if a foreigner wanted to be treated in a hospital subsidized by the government, he would be charged more than a national. There were signs up indicating that charges for foreigners would be more than for Thais and this point was also made whenever charges were discussed. It is dual pricing, but I don't see it as discriminatory in any unpleasant way (again this seemed to be an issue in the older thread I read).

Was going to use QS hospital for an umbilical hernia operation, missus was quoted 17,000 to 30,000 on phone but decided to go to BPH as it's just much nearer to home.

Had the op last Thursday and left hospital on Saturday, price was 130,000 baht.
