S/s Yacht Rigging Cable And Bottlescrew For A Balcony Blind?

I am putting up a covered outside blind, maybe an artificial canvas curtain, to screen a balcony.

It's about 3.5 metres long, so a rail would have to be quite thick to support itself and the blind without sagging. Not so pretty either especially when the blind's open which is most of the time.

So as an ex yachtsman I had an idea.

What about stainless rigging cable?

This could be fixed to the wall either end using a simple yacht fitting also, then near one end (or maybe better in the middle) a bottlescrew to tighten to taut. Then the curtain could be hung on stainless clips over the cable.

Good?

Trouble is I haven't seen anything like this in Chiangmai. I have seen this sort of thing used for expensive stainless railings for underneath the top rail which is solid but can't remember any locally.

Where do I go to look? Have to go to BKK or like that?

My first question is...What a "Yachtie" like you is doing in CM land-lock country like that?? biggrin.png

...you want a SS cable...gotta order from BKK,or Phuket IMO...or maybe I have some smile.png

What "simple yacht fitting" would attach a SS cable to a concrete wall? You will also need to swage the cable and this requires a special tool and swages. Far cheaper and better IMO would be an aluminum beam of rectangular cross section. If you do go with the cable put the turnbuckle at one end, never at the center where it will induce the greatest sag. Google "catenary". Sunbrella would be a good choice for the curtain.

555...if all else fails think I would use gal' fittings and wire available in any mom and pop hardware store..not much salt in CM ....pollution might affect 'em but a bit of steel paint topped with the colour of your choice might not look too bad.??biggrin.png

Maybe most ss yacht fittings will require swaging tool too unless you buy fricking expensive Sta-Locks???

Seem to recall from my sailing/yatching days that s/s cable and especially high grade s/s yatch fittings are not that cheap in the West, shudder to think what they cost here even if available.

I've purchased stainless steel cable and fittings at ChiangMai Tools, which is located on the Super Highway (#11) just east of the Ping River on the north side of the highway. You might want to Google images and take along photos of exactly what you're looking for.

Here's a streetview map:

Thankyou all

Though no goddamned aluminium tube thankyou Cloudhopper :-)

Ideally something like this:

http://www.s3i.co.uk/balustradeB4.php

.....which has the sort of nice narrow bottle screw (they call it a turnbuckle) I was thinking of which would allow eyes to slide over it. I think the buckle should be at the other end from that which the curtain folds back to. Then you could slide the curtain closed with the sort of wooden stick fixed to the leading top edge so if bpnecessary one could raise the curtain slightly to get it over the bottlescrew if it sticks.

It could indeed be made up of standard fittings and thankyou for the two source suggestions, Global I know and

CM tools I think I know where.

I shall try there this weekend and report back, dam_n I was in Global just this morning......it may almost be worth ordering this custom kit it's ideal.

6061 T6 is a much better grade but admittedly difficult to find here. Good luck finding the stainless fittings - you might want to take a magnet along....

What you want or somethings very similar to it are available in CM. Saw very good installations at a friend's house with stainless cables, crank to roll it up onto good looking aluminum roller assembly. He said installations were available from some of the big stores but found a specialty shop to do it for less. My recollection is that the shop is located in the first soi behind what was Ram 2 on the corner of the Super and the road to Mae Joe, the soi runs parallel to the Mae Joe road. They installed and have a selection of fabrics. Also have a good set up for an awning that can be cranked out for shade or cranked in neatly next to the house.

Thankyou Dante

Funnily enough I saw something like this....."proper" roller blinds or roll-in awnings.....for sale from a stall set up as you enter Homepro Superhwy upstairs. Part of the set-up was indeed SS cable and nice slim SS bottlescrew. However there was no-one to help, must have been buying somtam, and the price list was extraordinarily expensive, up to 50,000bt for about 2m high and think it was 5m wide.

However

I shall certainly look up your shop behind what I believe is called the Tepanya Hospital. Think you mean in the soi just behind the hospital or to it's right as you look from the Superhwy

(went to Chiangmai Tools today Mr Brad they indeed have SS cable 4mm at 100bt/m but not great fittings and mostly galvanised and rather cheap looking. However never been in before nice shop to know for bits).
