Bangkok Governor assures capital residents flooding situation will last only a few hours

BANGKOK, 29 September 2012 (NNT) – The Bangkok Governor has assured the public that the capital’s drainage system has been improved to help solve the problem of flooding, which is now believed to last only a few hours.

Bangkok Governor, M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Saturday that he is still worried about the flooding situation in some areas of the city.

He is pleading with Bangkok residents to have confidence in the City Hall while assuring that future flood will not last very long because of an improved drainage system.

However, M.R. Sukhumbhand stated that recent heavy rain in Bangkok and nearby areas, which amounted to as much as 140-150 millimeters, were beyond the drainage capacity of 60 millimeters.

Accordingly, in case of serious downpour, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s drainage system will need 3-4 hours to get rid of the flood.

The Bangkok Governor went on to say that the current giant tunnel is now effective in solving the flood problem over the area of 50 square kilometers and not the whole city.

In order to make sure that the capital will be safe from future flooding, more giant tunnels are planned to be built in other parts of Bangkok to help drain flood water into the Chao Phraya River, said M.R. Sukhumbhand.

Whhaaaat?

There will be no flood. If there is it will last only A FEW HOURS. The drainage system has been improved to help with flooding (what happened to 350M Baht?). Beyond the drainage capacity from rain (and not water released from up north dams - YET!). Oh! Suddenly it changes to 3-4 hours..... and that's only for 50 Sq Km - sod the rest of you! 50 Sq Km being the areas where all the members of the house live! Wow! A giant tunnel, we were told can cope with any capacity last week....... what a twanke_r this ace-hole is.

And then he has the audacity to close with 'more giant tunnels are proposed to be built'. Like when? Before the next flood, that the government knows will happen, as they're building a 6ft high flood wall all around Don Meuang Airport. Not on your nellie!

If Don Meuang floods, I DON'T think that wall will be standing for very long without gaping holes in it - and I'll be first in line with a pick-axe!

I think the opening of Don Muang should prove to be interesting, especially if the water reaches critical car tyre level on the landing lanes....

No flooding here. Water draining very quickly. Not sure what most people are complaining about.

Drainage clearance should have started November last year, Not a couple of weeks before monsoon season started in 2012.

Something doesn't add up here. I suppose 150 mm rainfall as he mentioned belong to cumulative value over 24 hours. It can't be hourly cumulative. It is pretty to high to assume that way taking the fact that annual average rainfall for Thailand is between 1500-1900 mm. The problem is how a 60 mm canal capacity can drain out 24-hour cumulative rainfall of 150 mm in 4 hours ? Furthermore it has been proven the canal can't do it a few days ago.

Well, yes, but it has rained hard before in previous years without leaving a foot of water covering the road like that.

The other major paper is reporting that there is flooding in the Lat Krabang Industrial estate.

Well, obviously, if there is no flooding in your area but other areas are still flooded - as long as you are dry - that's all the rest of us are concerned about.

Don't worry ... in 3 - 4 hours it will be gone through the big tunnel

On a serious note, we had all the spin last year. We had the propoganda flood even deeper than the real flood too.

Would it be too much to ask to just keep the news to facts (rather than what every vested interest wants to have in print)?

OK, we are all smart enough to realize that they spent the budget (don't ask me what is to show), after all this, just be frank and say the water is XYZ in location X and will result in Y.

All other "news" stories are just to camoflauge the spent budget and/or to get an even bigger budget.

The assurances, the bluster, the shell game. Be patient. The Thais have it nailed. No one in the inner ring of Bangkok need be concerned.

I bet the floods and rain are meant to be the scapegoat for the upcoming FIFA Futsal World Cup. This way the country won't be blamed for the lack of organization or readiness lacking for the event. It was the flooding!

If a shop owner has 1 meter of water in there shop for 3 hours, not 3 weeks, it doesn't make much difference to the damage done to his goods. Once the stuff gets wet it's history. What a crock!

Well i am sitting in the car park of the stadium in korar with about 300 kids playing futsal at a fifa sponsored tournament. Not badly organized so far, just someone forgot to organize seats.
