When buying a s/h car that's registered in another province.

Which vehicle registration office would change the name to the new owner?

existing owner's province office,

or new owner's province office.

Also, does the car need to have a new registration no. plate, showing the new owners

province? if so which province carries this out? and is it necessary?

Anyone that's had experience in these procedures i would appreciate your comments.

Thanks.

Can be done at either province office with correct paperwork, if in previous owners Province you have a certain number of days to change plates in new Province but not compulsory if name change in new province you may have to ask not to change plates or they do it automatically but old plates may be a pain if you lose one getting a replacement.

I've had to put the purchase of a S/H car on hold since i opened this thread,

but now i'm back in the market looking to buy a car soon.

Can someone who has the experience in buying a s/h car that is registered in another province

give me some advice on the following queries:

I reside in Pattaya and therefore would like to know what procedures and paperwork are required

for me to buy a s/h car in Bangkok?

My main concern is at what point should the payment for the car be made in relation to the registration

transfer to my name?

Can i go to the DLT in Bangkok with the seller and do the transfer there and pay for the car at that point?

What paperwork would i need to provide in doing this?

Would i then need to go to the Pattaya DLT and do any further paperwork?

Thanks in advance.

I bought a 2010 Highlander a few years ago from a car tent in Bangkok,it was put in my Thai wife's name at the time when I was here on a tourist visa We paid 10,000 baht deposit and arranged to meet at DLT the following day, I got a bank cheque for the final payment which we agreed to exchange on completing the transfer.

The dealer brought all the paperwork including signed photocopies of the registered owners ID card and the signed transfer document, the blue book, insurance certificate and the dealers sale documents.

He also brought copies of the wife's ID he made the day before.

The dealer arranged for the "fast processing" and we paid the extra (i cant remember how much, but may have been 1000baht or more) the clerk met with us outside and the wife signed some papers then we took the paperwork and the truck over to the inspection pits, when that was done we went back to the main building and gave all the paperwork to the dealer who went back inside and then came out and called us in, we paid the transfer fee to the clerk and recieved the blue book in the wife's name with all the papers in an envelope and handed over the cheque to the dealer, the daeler did say that they dont normally do this, but my wife talked him into it.All this still took half a day, so be prepared.

When we got back to Lampang where we live, we took the truck to the DLT office to get the Lampang rego plates and lable, and had to do another pit inspection and pay another fee, you also have to hand the plates in obviously.

I would strongly urge to take the seller with you to the DLT and agree to make payment when transfer is completed, just incase something goes wrong like they find a wrong engine number or tampered chassis number.

I think you will have less trouble if you do the transfer in the provence the car is registered. After that it would just be a matter of changing the province when you want to and you are not constrained by time issues. Someone I know transfered registation from CM to Chiangrai and the process took a couple of weeks for some reason.
