Facing crackdown, Jomtien jet ski vendors choose self-regulation

PATTAYA:Jomtien Beach jet ski operators are taking steps to self-regulate their businesses, creating operation zones, setting prices and penalties for breaking the rules.

The Jomtien Boatmen’s Club announced the new policies at its Oct. 3 meeting at the Krua Surf Restaurant. Club President Pattana Bunsawat said the rules were necessary given the Pattaya and Chonburi government’s crackdown on jet ski vendors on Pattaya Beach.

The new rules cover rentals of both jet skis and boats and will take effect by the end of the month.

Pattana said the first step was to establish zones of operations for individual vendors. The zones begin at the Pattaya Park Hotel and carve up the beach into five segments that end at the Sigma Hotel.

Half-hour rental prices were set based on vehicle type and engine size. Vendors will charge 700 baht for jet skis with 700 cc engines, 1,000 baht for 1,000 cc engines, and 1,300 baht for four-stroke engines.

Yes, words ain't enough after all these years of just words.

Nobody will believe anything until they see results. Nor should they.

You are right.

I think they are probably just hoping that a few tough looking headlines once every 6 months or so will make everyone think something is being done. You can imagine he....(you know who) sits at his desk and looks at the calender every 6 months and says to his PA... "right, time to keep the expats quiet, announce a new crack down on jet skis" "and make it look even more like i care" ........................that will keep them quiet for a few months !!! lol

As anyone knows who has been here for a few years, the jet ski scam business is a multi milion baht process which benefits many levels including the police and possibly even city hall. We/they/no one can stop such a force with so much money behind it...........especially when dealing with people's culture of think about today and not tomorrow.

But to appear that you are doing something can sometimes win people over very easily.

The core problem here is not "trying to stop it" ....its "they dont want to"

Almost as expensive as a Segway at Chiangmai Mai Zoo, but twice the thrill.

Correct me if i am wrong, but haven't they been 'self-regulating' all along?

Isn't the whole root of the problem the fact that they have no one to answer to but themselves?

I've never heard any stories about the Jomtien jet ski operators swindling anyone either. Does anyone have any stories about an actual scam they operate, rather than just taking the usual line of knocking everyone and everything Thai

And how does the club give jail time?? Its nice to know how much you need to pay for an hour, but we already knew that before, that isnt the problem. They post a telephone number in case of scams, why do they need to scam, and then you call their police friend? Nothing has changed, except now you get a direct line to the policeman that is in on the deal.

I've rented jetskis from the Pattaya beach guys. Never tried to extort money from me. But this was back in 2006 or 2007. Did this scam start sometime after or was I a lucky man? mellow.png
