Thai Birth Certificate Procedure

Hi,

I want to get a Thai birth certificate for my daughter with Thai mother. We live in Norway and far away form the consulate. For now i only want the birth certificate to be able to register here in the house book, the passport i then can arrange in Thailand later.

And i thought i was able to post the Norwegian birth certificate together with the required documents, but they insist that we have to apply in person.

In the Australian Thai embassy they state that it can be mailed in.

Is there any one that know this for sure with reference to the corresponding Thai law regarding this from the Minister of foreign affairs in Thailand.

I would think that the procedure would be like in comparable countries.

BIRTH CERTIFICATE

To obtain a Thai birth certificate for a Child who is born in Australia to a Thai father or a Thai

mother, please submit the following documents:

1. Parents’ Passports including or Thai Identification Card, if any (3 copies)

2. Certificate of Marriage (3 copies)

3. Australian Birth Certificate issued by the respective Births, Deaths and

Marriages Registry in Australia. It must be notarized by the Department of Foreign Affairs

and Trade of Australia (DFAT).

4. Completed application forms

5. Two photographs of the child (size 2" x 2")

6. AUS$25.00 fee for legalization of Birth Certificate which is notarized by the

DFAT.

If you want to check, you can contact the Ministry of Foraign Affairs, Consular department in Bangkok.

I have sent them an email already, just did post here to in case someone else have done this. And i risk that they only redirect me to the Thai embassy in Norwegian, and that answer i already know.

Just got the answer from the Legalization Division, Department of Consular Affairs, but as always when sending email with several Q, some of them are not answered.But at least i can apply in Thailand and get it sent back to Norway, in stead of traveling one way of 450 km in Norway at almost the same cost as a ticket to Thailand.

The Child who is born outside Thailand

Responsible person for birth notification is a child’s biological father or mother. If either parent is unable to notify the birth in person, either one of them can assign a relative or a neighbor who witnessed the birth of the child to notify accordingly.

A Place for Notifying Birth

If a child is born in an area in which the Royal Thai Embassy or the Consulate is situated, either parent or the assigned person can notify the birth with an authorized official, who is a registrar for overseas registration of the Royal Thai Embassy or the Consulate. When the diplomatic/consular official has been notified of birth, he will issue

a certification of birth or a birth certificate as evidence.You can notify the birth at Legalization Division, Department of Consular Affairs but we don’t have authority to issue

Embassy in an area which a child is born take time 2-3 month.

Yes, as stated you can apply in BKK at the consular department. They will sent the application to the embassy for you and handle the process. At the same time you can apply for a Thai passport, but might be easie to do at the embassy after you have the birth certificate.

There is also a legalisation office in Chiang Mai, if that might be more convienient. But not sure they also handle this, so better ask them first if you want to try there.

Thanks, we stay in Jomtien so BKK is the closest one...

If they can send the passport to Norway it may be easier to apply in Thailand, or we can pick up next time...

Apply in Norway might be easier. But depends on how long you stay in Thailand. In Thailand itself the passport will not take longer then 4 days to get, once the birth certificate etc has been arranged. (You will also first need to have the child registered on a household registration book in Thailand, for which you need the BC) So applying in Thailand might not be an option, but certainly can't hurt to discuss it with them.

Applying through the embassy will take longer, but has the advantage that it will be clear on next entry into Thailand why the child doesn't have a departure card and there is no record of the child leaving the country.

I am not in the hurry, and i am going to Bangkok anyway and have time to do it. Just need the birth certificate verified by the Norwegian consul at Jomtien, have it translated into Thai and my wife's house book and marriage certificate. And they mail it to the Thai embassy in Norway, and it get processed from there. We will also ask if this can be done for the passport.

In Norway i have to go over 400 km one way to get it done as they don't accept mail inn applications. Then i have the birth certificate ready to next visit and can register here in the house book and then get the passport. And she will be coming into Thailand with a Norwegian passport and can leave on this... Next time we use Thai passport both ways.

Have just finish this paper run and it is as always in "the land of copies" a lot of paper running work.

Just some update if needed by anyone.

Got my birth certificate from Norway, verified by notaries publicus, apostile from the foreign ministry of Norway, Then verified the original and "translation to Thai" at the Norwegian consult/embassy in Thailand, Then it has to be legalized at Legalization Division, Department of Consular Affairs in Bangkok with express fee, before we had to start the fight to find someone to understand that this should be send to the Thai embassy in Norway for processing At last we was let into the back office and some officer came and we got it done correctly (i hope). Had to provide a name for picking up the Thai birth certificate as it would be send back to Thailand from the embassy, plus some bath for postage.Hopefully in a couple of months we know if it went OK.

Just some advice that my wife did not tell me before i started:

Get the correct names used for the mother and child as they don't always translate the name letter for letter, but instead use a English verbal translation instead. So if not i had to go back with the translation for a minor correction where i got the question about the correct spelling i might have gone to bkk with a wrong name in the document as my wife had used a different Thai spelling in ID card... And that would have meant starting all over again. The hole prosess took about 4 houres, where one of them was the "som tam" time in the office. So the best is to be there when they open in the morning.
