This one flew into my garden.. amazingly still alive, as they have a f*(ckton of cats at the house opposite ours.

But what is it? It's not a budgie, but similar size and similar demeanor.

Exceptionally tame, doesn't mind even to get picked up, loves cuddling and above all loves getting in people's hair.

Trying to find the owner, but we may just end up stuck with it. So, what is it and what does it eat? I got some budgie feed and it seemed to enjoy that. It also had a little drink of water. Will try some fruit as well.

It looks like a Canary bird to me, they are of many different colours, and normally kept in cages for their wonderful singing.

It might have flown out of some cage in the neighbourhood.

No, it's definitely some kind of parakeet or young dwarf parrot. A 'parrotlet' perhaps. Canaries just hop about and aren't very social / into people. This one is more affectionate than my wife actually. ;) Couldn't get him/her to sit down anywhere except on my shoulder or in my hair. :/

Definitely a parrotlet.

Fun story; last month my brand new to Canada Thai dog that hasn't killed a living thing before, chomped up one of my Mom's 2 parrotlets. A matching one, to the one pictured, flew immeaditaly in front of my dog on arrival to Mom and Dads house, and was quickly killed for it's brash impudence.

Don't know what it is.

But I do know it belonged to some one. Birds have to learn that humans can be kind and caring for them.

My Dad used to raise parakeets. We would take them in a small room shut the door and let them lose. Then pursue them by putting are finger under there breast until they finally felt safe to get on them. From there on in they would land on are head or shoulder.

What does it taste like, that might help?
half way between an platypus and a koala.

Edit: ok it's not a pelican.

Ahh but they are not birds, so if your from Oz should be an emu and a 28.

We are a cultured lot in Oz, still I believe the only country that eats its two national emblems on its crest (Emu and Kangaroo)....nothing gets between us and a good feed..

Saying that, perhaps don't worry what it is and just feed (fatten) it. By Christmas would be an addition to roast potatoes and a sage and onion gravy.

Winnie tell your daughter its a turkey and be done with it.

Yep, goshawk is the first one who comes to mind.

sorry, I was quoting a Rodney Rude skit - pensioner eats pelican.

for those easily offended I'd advise them NOT look it up.

Too right you are....showing our age here....(and associated memory lapse on my part)...

Off for a nostalgic look at Last Lager Waltz on youtube and then to bed......

Agreed; I had a pet budgie as a kid and I know they get reasonably tame when you get them young enough. Tame enough to enjoy sitting on your finger, etc. This one is even more comfortable with a person hand, it must have been hand-raised / fed.

Kind of like this:

Thanks to Eek and Tyways for recommending Goshawk; sent him a PM.

I think it is a Forpus, smallest of the parrot family. Fruit, veg, hemp seed, millet and sunflower seeds are usually readily eaten.

The seeds of most fruits are poisonous to them

I think you're right. I almost hope the owner doesn't show up; we did ask around in the village. From what I've read they're excellent pets. About as smart as dogs but they eat a lot less. wink.png And my daughter is kind of smitten with the beast, after being freaked out at first when it 'attacked' her. (flying into her hair without knowing what it was. smile.png )

Looks like a love bird, I would say that it is use to human contact, nice bird, I am sure it will make a great pet and give you years of enjoyment. Just a suggestion make sure you have some 'cuttle fish' or similar so that it can keep its beak in shape!

Enjoy!

that would be cuttlefish bone, not chopped up bits of cuttlefish from the fish market... i'm sure the bird wouldn't appreciate a live one.

they love that stuff, it's good for them too.
