Chinese PM to attend centre opening

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao will visit Thailand this month to attend the opening of a Chinese Cultural Centre in Bangkok, a diplomat said.

Zhang Yiming, charge d'affaires at the Chinese Embassy, told reporters at the Thai Journalists Association that the construction of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Thailand was expected to be complete this month. Wen is expected to visit in mid- or late November.

Speaking at the opening of a Chinese language course provided for Thai journalists by the association, Zhang emphasised the strong relationship between Thailand and China, especially in the cultural arena. Thailand is home to 22 Confucius Institutes, more than any other country. And 1,278 volunteer language teachers sent by Beijing teach here. This accounts for a third of all such teachers abroad.

Cause of car's fatal plunge unknown

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- Police had experts inspect the wreckage of a brand-new car that mysteriously plunged from the fifth floor of Rasa Tower's parking lot to the pavement in Phaholyothin Soi 19 in Bangkok on Friday night, killing the female driver instantly.

The deceased was Chevrolet (Thailand) manager for auto parts Kobkarn Wicharat, 40. Phaholyothin police investigator Captain Thanakrit Wannachote said the cause of the incident remained unknown, but police discovered that Kobkarn only recently learnt how to drive. Police said they would have experts conduct a further inspection of Chevrolet Cruze car on Tuesday to see if it had mechanical problems.

Thanakrit said this was unlikely a homicide because security-camera footage showed Kobkarn walking to her vehicle alone and driving away without anyone trailing her. City officials would inspect the building plan to see if its concrete walls were built to proper standards.

Talk of charter rewrite keeps political heat up

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Remark by Phumtham and ex-PM's visit will stir up anti-Thaksin groups

In Thailand nowadays, the political temperature has to be kept near boiling point. After weeks of relative calm, many protagonists seem to now be itching for action. Thaksin Shinawatra is rumoured to be planning to swoop down near the northern Thai border, an anti-Thaksin gathering drew an unexpectedly large crowd a few days ago, and we can always count on some people in the ruling Pheu Thai Party to bring back the explosive issue of a constitutional revamp.

PM to use Asia-Europe Meeting to restore confidence in Thai post-flood economy

20121104124305-640x0.jpg

BANGKOK, Nov 4 - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said that she will use the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 9) to be held in Laos Nov 5-6 to restore confidence in Thai post-flood economy, as well as to expand trade and investment.

Ms Yingluck said the ASEM is a forum in which 49 Asian and European countries use as a platform of cooperation in various fields including economy, politics, social and culture.

She said she will reaffirm at the meeting--which will take place in the Lao capital of Vientiane--for the continued growth of the Thai economy, the country's readiness in post-flood era, as well as trade and investment opportunities, after the transportation linkage projects among ASEAN countries are complete.

The premier added Asia and Europe's close cooperation will enhance trade and investment and this is a good opportunity for the two regions to work together to solve the crises.

Ms Yingluck is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with leaders of five countries on the sideline of the ASEM to follow up the development of previous bilateral talks.

The Thai premier will also discuss the opening of the 4th Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge which is expected on Dec 12, after the 3rd Friendship Bridge was inaugurated on Nov 11, last year.

Ms Yingluck said she also wants to renew the joint cabinet retreat with the Laotian government as Thailand recently did with Vietnam late last month since the meeting allowed ministers of both countries to discuss issues more closely.

An informal forum for dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe, the ASEM Summit is the only platform that provides a bridge for all leaders from the two regions. It is held every two years, alternating between Asia and Europe. Thailand was host of its inaugural meeting in 1996. The latest meeting, ASEM 8, was held in Brussels, Belgium, in 2010.

This year's meeting convened under the theme "Friends for Peace; Partners for Prosperity." An official ceremony to welcome new members Norway, Switzerland and Bangladesh will also be held. The objective of ASEM is to provide a venue for the leaders of Asia and Europe to constructively discuss economic, political, security and socio-cultural challenges commonly faced by both sides. One of the seven banners protesting the film ‘Innocence of Muslims’ hangs at the entrance of Masjid Nuruddee Neeyah in Rawai.

SPECIAL REPORT

PHUKET: Seven banners have appeared in Rawai in front of Muslim shops, houses and even a mosque. The English words dominating the banners are jarring to many. However, the Thai translation and the meaning behind the signs tells a very different story. The Phuket Gazette’s Chaiyot Yongcharoenchai reports.
