Hello I've been reading through posts on here to answer my questions but still would like to clarify some things.

Currently I'm living in Thailand with my Thai girlfriend but I'm working for a UK company online, not earning over the required £18,600.

I will propose to my girlfriend for Christmas this December in England whilst she is on a tourist visa then we'll both return to Thailand. I would like to Marry her next year and after that for us to both move to England where I plan on finding a new higher paid job which will satisfy the requirements.

1. I take it we will have to marry in Thailand first?

2. Is there anyway whatsoever for her to be working in England with me whilst I find a job and work for 6 months in England? From what I can see the only way she could be with me is on a tourist visa and not working.

3. After we married in Thailand returned to the UK, would we then have to register our marriage in England?

3. After 6 months of me working in England, what is the next step? She would then need to take her life in the UK and English test? Could she do that before the 6 months? After we satisfied all these requirements am I right in saying she would receive a settlement visa?

Thanks for all the help.

Just one other question, I've seen people mentioning savings can be used instead of income - how much is needed in savings? Thanks Lime

You can marry in Thailand or in England, if you marry in Thailand you do not really need to register the marriage in the UK, but you can through the Embassy in Bangkok by giving them a copy of the marriage certificate and some money/

Remember to marry in Thailand you need the affirmation to marry certified at the Embassy, then translated and certified by the MFA, then you can get married.

For the other parts I expect someone else with better knowledge to come on soon and help you, good luck.

No; you cannot register a Thai marriage at or through the British embassy; you cannot register a marriage at or through any British embassy anywhere.

What you can do is deposit a copy of your Thai marriage certificate with the GRO in the UK via the embassy; this is not registration, does not mean you can have a British marriage certificate and doing so or not has no effect on the legal status of your marriage whatsoever.

It merely means that you can obtain a copy of your Thai marriage certificate from the GRO in the UK if you should want to at some later date.

If you marry in Thailand there is no need to register it again in the UK, and vice versa. A legal Thai marriage is recognised in the UK and a legal UK marriage is recognised in Thailand.

If you have been living and working outside the UK and earning at least the minimum income (£18600 at 9/7/12 plus the extra for any children applying) for at least 6 months prior to the date of the application, e.g. in Thailand, and you have a confirmed job offer in the UK starting no more than 3 months after you return to the UK; then income from this new employment in the UK will be taken into account for the financial requirement.

Savings above a minimum of £16,000 will reduce the required income level on a sliding scale until savings of £62,500 or above means that no income is required at all.

You may find that UK Settlement Visa Basics answers the rest of your questions, but having read that feel free to ask here if you need more information.

Not quite true. You cannot register a Thai marriage in the UK. You can deposit your marriage certificate at the General Register Office in the UK (although I'm not sure why you would want to). That said, a Thai marriage ( registered at an amphur) is valid in the UK.

The amount of savings required, if you have no provable income) is 62,500 GBP.

Sorry, 7x7. Posted at the same time as you.
