Indeed, very easy. Although adult applicant's do usually have to attend an identity interview before being issued one.

If starting work before obtaining one the employer will use a temporary one based on the persons date of birth and gender; i.e. dd/mm/yy/M or F.

The usual scenario is to travel some distance (can be 50 - 100 miles for an interview, they will explain what documents to take.

At this point phone them up and explain, travelling this distance by Bus,with a young child (or some other true reason),is out of the question,it's too cold,or the Buses are not regular, and it would be an all day Journey.

At this stage you will start being passed around to different Departmentment.Hold on in there and don't take no for an answer. Also explain your wife wants to work and pay taxes, and you are making it hard for us /her.

Eventually you will be asked to give her details by phone, and the NI Number, and then they will send on her NI card in six weeks.

Total time 30-40 minutes on the phone.meantime you have the NI Number and she can start work.

There are 3 departments dealing with the same thing, act on the assumption, that one hand doesn't know what the other is doing, and you will be somewhere near it.

On the government website they do talk about a routine interview to confirm identity of an applicant. Hopefully you can do it by post but it does not seem to be automatic.

The jobcentre here just handed over the forms and the application was processed by post.

Did this recently for my wife. Firstly, applied by ringing the hotline on the gov.uk website. I spoke saying my wife's English was not up to it. they wanted to know why she wanted a NI number, for work? I said no, she wants to open a particular bank account with high interest rate e.g. Nationwide mysaverplus, and the bank insists on a NI number, presumably for correlation with HMRC on income tax on interest payments The lady said, yes, this is happening more and more. The processing office is based on Isle of Wight. They sent a lengthy form to fill in and requested supporting documents. No interview needed. A few weeks later we received a letter confirming her new NI number.

We applied for a NI Number for my Thai wife in the UK last year at our local Jobcentre. We presented her spouse visa in her passport as proof of residency and they issued her with a number in a few days by post, couldn't have been easier, no interview.

Just go to your local employment agency they will make an appointment for you.

I assume you mean Jobcentre.

Employment agencies are private companies and cannot help in this matter.

Did it for my wife about 6 weeks ago. Phoned the number I found on the government's website and asked for a N.I. number for my wife because she wanted to work. They sent an application form the next day and the wife had her number about 2 weeks later. We had to send a copy of her passport with visa page and that was it.

My wife got issued hers automatically after our daughter was born when they registered our daughter for Child Benefit.

That was a long time ago though back when everyone got it.

Biggest problem is - we don't remember the NI number so we're going to have to get a reminder issued.
