200 Dogs Saved From Meat Market: Nakhon Phanom

Looks like Soi Dog's will have more work now...

The Soi Dog folk are doing the best they can to stop this filthy trade. Check out their website and donate a little something. From the comments on this forum it seems to me that it would be a good thing if the Vietnamese could change their tastes from dog to farang. Then the bars could empty out and the girls go back to making a respectable living.

Ah, so you're one of the misinformed who believes that its farangs who fuel the sex trade in Thailand? Much larger local industry ... you're just not getting about enough

A bit closer to home, I have seen many times pickup trucks crammed full of dogs heading on down the soi towards the sea front where there are many restaurants, (Baan Amphur) the trucks come back later empty.

The Restaurants are all popular and every night there are many tourist busses (passengers look like chinese) heading for these restaurants.

I told my son and he said its not ilegal in Thailand to eat dogs !!!

Should I inform the autorities or will that be a waste of time?

Since the bucket trucks quit collecting unwanted dogs, they are multiplying like flies. Rather than being taken away to be eaten, the farmers are using poison and/or beating them to death.

GREAT job do-gooders !!!!!!!

If you save them, you should feed them.

I am glad to see that the authorities are trying to do some good. Generally Thai people are very good to their dogs. Remember these are intelligent and affectionate animals. The big problem is the demand has to be stopped in other countries. Loong and Artist you are sick in the head, I wish you would be collected and put into a crowded cage for maybe several days and you know the rest. How can you complain about something so mundane and suggest such a practise. Get a life.

Why on earth do you say that I'm sick in the head?? Perhaps you should read posts properly before reacting like a pompous prat!

For your benefit, my post that you have responded so vehemently to is reproduced below. Do you read that I condone this practice of cramming animals into cages for long journeys to be killed inhumanely?

"Generally Thai people are very good to their dogs. "

Well that statement alone proves how little you know about Thailand. The majority of sick dogs are left to suffer, mosty are malnourished, being fed on mainly leftover rice. When the owners are bored with them, they will often just take them and leave them at the side of a highway.

Try getting out a bit more.

Since the last big arrest, nobody comes to our village to swap buckets etc for dogs.

This has resulted in the growth of the canine population, larger and more aggressive packs. It's only a matter of time before somebody is seriously injured or killed by these animals. I have to carry a stick with me when I walk to certain areas.

It is not a very nice trade, but at least it helps to control the dog population. Without it, people need to take responsibility for their animals, especially the bitches.

My ex GF in Sisaket had a Golden Retriever. Someone stole it out of her yard and was seen walking with it a few km away... They got the dog back and the guy who took it turned out to be a dog meat vendor. He wanted 1,200 baht to get the dog back. Of course, I had to pay for it. I thought maybe this was a new take on the "sick buffalo" story, but it was true.

And you paid it? Really? Sounds like a great scam.

There are Way to Many Dogs running around the Streets everywhere in Thailand, The More they get the Better! Only 200? They could take 200.000 off the Streets and You still wouldn't notice! Of Course it is Not the Dogs Fault that Selfish People don't take Control them and Stop them Breeding everywhere? Before You Comment it's the Dogs I am Talking about not the People!!!

In 2011 it was estimated there were 7.4 million pet dogs in Thailand, so taking into account stray dogs the population in Thailand is huge, rated 10th in the world. In Bangkok there are an estimated 200 stray dogs per square kilometer. Tthe Thai authorities are reluctant to take any action, but the dog population wandering the streets and beaches in completely out of control. The sight of countless poorly cared for skinny dogs in the streets and tourist destinations with rampant skin diseases is an embarrassment for Thailand.

It always seems strange when animal lovers hate humans more than animals, so much that they would be cruel to their own species in their efforts to protect another species. Perhaps you would prefer to be a dog?

Long ago I came to the conclusion that dogs rule the Thai countryside. They lie in the roads refusing to move from on coming traffic forcing you to swerve avoid them, they howl in unison in the middle of the night, they indulge in public sexual displays, they race around attacking each other and tearing the fur from their hides and worst of all they hate Farangs.

Come to think of it perhaps being a Thai dog wouldn't be so bad.

They do get eaten though. I have eaten dog and it tastes good. I suppose you have the same affection for the poor buffalo, pigs and chickens that cruel and nasty humans eat. What about the poor insects, cicadas, ants, live prawns that we eat? Where do you draw the line? What about the poor papaya, I shall feel so guilty next time I eat som tam. I can just hear the poor green papaya screaming in pain.

As for getting a life, I have one and I am very happy with it, what about you, surely it must be miserable worrying about the poor dogs, buffalo, pigs, chicken, insects, prawns and papaya all day long?.

Compassion extends beyond species my friend. If you feel no compassion for animals that are ill treated there's very little chance that you have much that extends to human beings - or peerhaps you just shrug you shoiulders and think life is cheap ?

Artist I never said I hate humans read the post, howver I hate ignorant people like you that compare dogs to fruit. You need to get out more, perhaps to a Doctor.

You said that you wished that I and Loong would be collected and put in a crowded cage for several days and you know the rest. This suggests to me either a general hatred of the human species or an irrational hatred of two members of the species who you know nothing about.

There is not a lot of point is discussing the issue with somebody whose intellectual capacity is limited to insults

How many Thai people do you see exercising or positively disciplining their dogs. Majority do neither, just leave them alone all day & half the night in small compounds with the dogs bored and constantly barking though lack of socialisation and anxiety. Same applies to many foreigners

Other then the stick, what are you doing to help? The Pollution Solution Group admits that there is a problem with way to many dogs, If the complainers (Farangs) would get together in each community, (Village) donate, find a vet that will give a good price and start getting them spayed, nurtured, in the meantime give some food and water to keep them friendly rather then a threat...

By reaching out, we can all make a difference...

There is way to many, talking the talk, never walking the walk, be part of the solution and while your out there, if you see any dangers to our Children, Wildlife, Waterways, Soil, remove them, might as well get some needed exercise while your walking the walk...Remember Inner-Wealth must be earned, you can't buy it.

What a wonderful thing, It is never to late to start giving back. Happy trails, "NOW" Is The "ONLY" Time There Is.

Kapun Krup, Mahalo, Thank You

1) I am not your friend

2) Your statement that if I have no compassion for animals that are ill treated there's very little chance that I have much that extends to human beings is fallacious. Its just as likely that a serial killer will love her cat as a cat hater will love his wife.

3) I agree that wilfully being cruel to animals is probably bad for the person being cruel.

4) I don't have any compassion for the cow that was incorporated into my hamburger at MacDonald's, or the chicken whose breast I chewed at KFC any-more than the dogs that attack me in the village. They are just animals and we eat them.

5) They taste good!!!

Reaching out for what one thinks is right or wrong is not a waste of time, It is being a voice for the voiceless, Go for it, 3 calls, police, city hall, news papers, Carpe Diem...

Now what are they going to do with them? I wouldn't be surprised if they vast majority of them are put-down in the end anyway.

Definitely not. They will be released back on to the streets before that happens. In the past when they've caught dog traders they've put thousands of the dogs in to shelters, most died from disease or poor conditions and hundreds escaped but they never put them down. It can be difficult to even find a vet in Thailand willing to do it for a sick family pet.
