Hello

Is there a minimum finanacial legal requirement for Thais who wish to leave the country (Thailand).

I am sure I read somewhere that they must have a minimum of 20,000 baht to leave the country. Or could it be a requirement for them to enter a country.

If you book on Air Asia, the "Travel Requirements" has this:

4.6 Cash/Credit Card

Thailand

The Thai Immigration requires all Thai citizens leaving Thailand to have a minimum of THB 20,000 or a credit card with them, failing which the check-in counter will not issue a boarding pass.

Not sure if this is because they are usually dealing with budget Thai travelers, but this is the only place I've seen this.

Well, you learn something new each day.

It's the first I've heard of such a thing, though. Has it ever been enforced?

Scouse.

I imagine it's antiquated. Guess the question is does Air Asia enforce it?

Nope - took a trip to Singapore with my gf. Air Asia barely asked for identification. :o

Wonder if a solo Thai paying cash for a ticket would skate as well.

As far as I know there is no legal requirement for a Thai to hold funds in order to quit their country.

What AirAsia seem to be doing is minimising their liability as a carrier in the event of a Thai passenger being refused admission at a destination within their sphere of operations, generally countries which do not require Thai to hold visas before seeking entry. These are therefore often popular holiday destinations but are also countries in which the Thai habitually seek illegal employment. Immigration officials, particularly those of Malaysia,Singapore and Hong Kong, often identify individuals posing as tourists intent upon employment by their lack of sufficient funds and probably modest economic backgrounds. In such cases they are often refused entry and detained pending return to their country of origin, the cost of which would be borne by the inbound carrier.

By imposing the arbitrary minimum level of funds, seemingly set at 20,000bt, on Thai travellers, AirAsia are giving themselves some lee way in sorting the wheat from the chaff thereby reducing the risk of carrying an inadmissible passenger.

As a previous poster rightly observed, such an imposition on a Thai travelling with a farang would obviously be a redundant exercise.
