Jai Dee
Officials found smoking or consuming alcohol in government buildings, will be punished. Public Health Minister Pinij Jarusombat (พินิจ จารุสมบัติ) said that officials found smoking or consuming alcohol in government buildings will be punished, while asking cooperation from the Education Ministry in prohibiting schools from providing alcohol in festivities. Mr. Pinij said that today, the ministry will start enforcing the anti-smoking regulations, saying that officials in the Public health Ministry who are found smoking will face disciplinary penalties. He said that outsiders who smoke in the ministry’s compounds will be told to leave immediately. He said that a ministerial regulation will be issued to prohibit the sale of cigarettes and alcohol, while consumption of the two products is absolutely forbidden. However, he said that the measure will be implemented at the ministry before being enforced in 28 other government agencies. The Public Health minister added that he will submit a letter to Education Minister Jaturon Chaisang (จาตุรนต์ ฉายแสง), asking for cooperation in prohibiting sale of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages in schools. He said that no alcohol will be allowed in parties, such as reunions, or New Year’s parties at schools. sriracha john
The Public Health minister added that he will submit a letter to Education Minister Jaturon Chaisang, asking for cooperation in prohibiting sale of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages in schools. Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 10 Febuary 2006 Bangkok Herald-Examiner As reported earlier about the new ban on selling cigarettes and alcohol in schools, the Bangkok Herald-Examiner contacted a few students for their opinion on the matter. Nong Somdet, age 9 and a Prathom 3 student at Kuchininathaburi School was visibly upset, stating, "I've always started my school day with a bottle of Leo and a pack of L&M Greens... now what am I supposed to do? They have no d@mn right and I'm really pissed off." Nong Neuchanat, age 8 and a Prathom 2 student at the same school applauded the idea and stated that she was tired of all the boys in her classroom reeking of stale tobacco and cheap beer. "It's really bad at recess when the boys all want to play spin the bottle. I'm grateful for the Education Ministry to have taken this step."
