High Season Or Idiot Season

you guys want to know a bit about owning running a hotel here in Pattaya

First thing I'll say is that being an owner of anything does not make you an expert, I've seen some disasters here in my time of people who thought they had it but found out they didn't, I've seen a few guys that have successful businesses here but I'd put that down more to luck than expertise.

I recently heard of a hotel here that blocked up all the electric sockets in the reception area so guests couldn't use the electricity for their laptops etc while having a coffee - <deleted> is that all about lol

did you think electricity was free? places offer free wifi , it is for people to have coffee or food and use wifi, it is not for people to spend the whole day on their laptop and not spend a baht.

This customer always right "crap" is just that. While majority are reasonable people, there is always enough of those who think they are owed the world and business should bend over backwards to please them. Funny though that those are always the ones in the cheapest rooms.

May be business do not want them, have they ever considered that?

Much better to have few good customers, than 100 "riff raff" customers

Interesting point of view?

I think what you need to do is just double all of your prices across the board.

Pesky bloody cheap charlie customers <deleted> em all. thumbsup.gif

BTW maybe some of your customers just happened to be walking past a 7/11. Maybe they needed to purchase something not stocked in your fabulous hotel, maybe they thought hey look water is cheaper here may as well get some while we are here . 12 pack 30B saved, zero time wasted.

Maybe they do not even check the prices in room, many people just work by the rule, buy your own drinks as the in room drinks are always overpriced.

i see you very good at maths, 12 pack at 1 baht per bottle = 12 baht, but with your great analytical skills its already 30thumbsup.gif

Then, lets all start to write fictional assumptions, because we all soooo smart, better yet, lets not read the thread but jump in with your opinion, which no doubt is very important.

I think you will find and I could be wrong, as I have not bought water at 7/11 for quite a while, as we get it delivered, but a 12 pack of water at 7/11 is less than 90B so yes compared to your 10B per bottle 30B+ saved.

Also, I have read the thread and you have been most amusing thank you.

did you think electricity was free? places offer free wifi , it is for people to have coffee or food and use wifi, it is not for people to spend the whole day on their laptop and not spend a baht.

The solution to this is to introduce a "one order every 30 minutes" policy, as is often implemented in Europe.

Indeed, but you would probably have more success with this if Pattaya wasn't a riff-raff destination. Having chosen to open up shop here you are somewhat obliged to take the customers as they come. If you want classy customers you would need to be in a completely different part of the world.

its true, but you find Pattaya is changing. As i mentioned this year is particularly high with cheap charlies but also high with good customers. Last year was different, were much less cheap charlies but also less big spenders,

Its funny you mention having 30 mins policy, some people are really good and will order food and drinks while using wifi and charging, but some would not even order a water, so when informing them that electric is charged at 50 baht per hour, all over sudden they do not need to charge.

Had one the other day, wanted to borrow one of the staff's phone to insert his sim, she was nice enough and gave it to him, 2 hours later, not even 10 baht tip or a thank you.

the next day, he wanted to use her phone again, but she refused, he started demanding she give it to him.

I have to agree, Most people are OK, but there is still too large a percentage of Cheap Charlies looking for something for nothing who will take advantage of someone if allowed.

Pattaya may well be changing, but one thing that never changes and never will is, cheap charlies and balloon chasers rocking up every year.

Wasnt so long ago some on here were proclaiming cheap charlies were dead and buried after the Thais abolished the 30 day visas the Pattaya balloon chasers used as a means to stay here.

Anyway will be in Pattaya in a couple of weeks, will be sure to keep my eyes peeled for cheap charlies, thankfully I usually stay at the Siam Bayshore so hopefully they will be in short supply.

I rather dismissed show off behaviour as Pattaya is full of it. Your other posts are complaining about people taking 1 baht change, perhaps they know (at least I think I'm correct) that leaving a 1 baht tip is considered an insult and left to show distaste at poor service? Surely people can do what they like with their own money? I still think you are wrong but I'll be more than happy to pop into the Hilton to discuss this over $10 drinks - as long as you pay!

as long as i pay-lol, will you leave them a tip or also expect me to do it?tongue.png

Yes if the service or the product was bad , i agree, however when they return on daily basis and lick their plates so there is not a crumb left, perhaps a 20 baht tip on a 500 baht meal would be appropriate, do not you think?

Ah, the penny finally drops!

"they return on daily basis and lick their plates" - you run a kennel. licklips.gif

The cheap charlie seem to find the new bottom, in my hotel bottle of water in the mini bar is 10 baht, and yet they would go all the way to the store to buy 1 for 8 or 9. not to mention taking 1 baht change after a meal

How does this interfere with your life?

You certainly keep your eyes open..........or maybe you're just really describing yourself?

how does that interfere with my life? well considering that i said i own a hotel and they prefer to go to the store to save 1 baht , that affects sales, which in turn affects profits which in turn affects my life style.

When they eat and wait for 1 baht change, it upsets my staff, when my staff is upset they do not come to work happy, when they do not come to work happy, they provide bad customer service, when they provide bad customer service i lose customers, which in turn again reflects on sales and again reflects on profits, which then reflects on life style.

Hope its sufficient enough explanation for you on how it interferes with my liferolleyes.gif

Could charge 1bt less for water, staff happy, customers happy. If you sell 200 bottles maybe 200baht down. hope you can have a life style not too far removed from where you sit now.

I get my water delivered, maybe you missed that.

they could always travel up to Isaan and bring some even cheaper, better yet fly to Lao and bring some from thererolleyes.gif

Really some people on Thai Visa just so bored, that can not help but troll. Not only troll, but trying to justify someone on holidays chasing to save 1 baht.

I guess you must be one of the quality people residing in Thailandthumbsup.gif

I have been following this thread, and watching it unwind from, "high season or idiot season" into a, "lemoncake fiscal season". So far lemoncake you have disagreed / fell out / got upset with half a dozen posters, on no matter what point they have put forward. All this time spent arguing the case over 1 Baht, whether it be a tip, cost of a bottle of water, or anything else.

Is business really that bad Basil?

How or why does one need to borrow another's phone to install a sim card?

Idiot season all year round

Plus cheap charlie all year round too the Missy has them coming into her travel shop for flights and what not wanting to pay much no surprise travel agent shop are closing everywhere in Pattaya it's unreal..

the last waves of people not able to use the internet to book flights and beyond the helping properties of viagra are slowly phasing out and shifting towards their retirement homes, from where they don't travel as much anymore.

I too have been wondering when high season is starting, based on the volume of people. I have been doing my own little survey based on a popular eating establishment near Big C on Pattaya Klang. At 7pm, only 7 tables were occupied out of 32 tables on Sunday and Monday nights this week. Two weeks only 6 out of 32 tables were occupied at 7pm. In February 2013, 25-32 out of 32 tables were occupied at 7 pm.

An important factor to consider is that the food prices at this restaurant increased 10 to 30 baht around April-May, so now cashew chicken goes for 100 baht, 20 B increase. Maybe people are going elsewhere to eat because the prices have increased?

are there ANY expat that don't actually hate the high season? crazy traffic, high prices everywhere, rental prices 1,5x higher than usual and almost all buildings/hotels full, not to mention less girls available... it's like a <deleted> season! The peak/worse being april due to songkran.

The original post has been edited as it infringes the following rule.

7) Not to post slurs or degrading comments directed towards any group on the basis of race, nationality, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

I have also removed all references to the term so we can now discuss the high season with out the racist undertones

So jokes about one legged black lesbian American transexuals that are into bondage but love jesus are out i presume?tongue.png

Yep, the only really good part is that the weather's fine and relatively cool. The go-gos have more and prettier girls. New Year's can be nice or wild or insane depending on where you are.

Still, it's great to be living in Pattaya at all times except during Songkran. I may hole up this year rather than leave.

In Chiang Mai, High Season used to start - very slowly - about the end of October and keep building up. The last few years it is more like the end of November or the beginning of December before it starts. Maybe Pattaya is similar?

Your " MISSY" should open her eyes and stop blaming farangs. Ask your MISSY if she thinks there are too many travel shops. I think your MISSY should buy a bar.

Dear pablodiablo: McDonald's is the world's leading global food service retailer with over 34,500 locations serving more than 69 million customers in more than 100 countries each day. It uses only quality ingredients in its food and it would not be in this position if it food products were *hit. You can get a beef stir fry from Mac's at 59 baht so its prices are not twice the price of others. Maybe other restaurants could learn a few things from the leading global food retailer!

But this thread is about when is high season starting not about running a restaurant.
