BANGKOK, Nov 21 -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has begun his official visit to Thailand this morning and will have an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej later today after meeting with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Mr Wen's tight schedule begins with Ms Yingluck in jointly presiding over the opening ceremony of the Chinese Cultural Centre on Thiamruammitr Road.

The center consists of a theater, an exhibition hall, a library, and classrooms to provide the public with Chinese cultural activities in Thailand, as well as training and information services.

It is designed to promote better understanding of Chinese culture, cultural exchanges, and friendship between the two countries.

Afterward an official welcoming ceremony will be held at Government House before a plenary meeting to discuss enhancing Thai-Chinese relations and cooperation.

Mr Wen and Ms Yingluck will witness the signing of bilateral pacts, including an Agreement on Educational Cooperation and exchanging the Instruments of Ratification of the Treaty on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons.

The two leaders will later hold a joint press conference.

Premier Wen will also pay a courtesy call on Privy Council President Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, Air Chief Marshal Siddhi Savetsila and Gen Surayud Chulanont, Privy Councilors, at the Privy Council Chambers.

Mr Wen will be granted an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej at Siriraj Hospital at 5pm before returning to China.

The visit by the Chinese premier will further strengthen bilateral relations between Thailand and China and enhance cooperation in all aspects under the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership between Thailand and China. (MCOT online news)

"Premier Wen will also pay a courtesy call on Privy Council President Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, Air Chief Marshal Siddhi Savetsila and Gen Surayud Chulanont, Privy Councilors, at the Privy Council Chambers."

Obama really missed a trick here. I guess Wen knows where the real power lies - :-)))

Corruption is always under the table in the relationship with Thailand and China. The USA gives Thailand more financial support than any nation but it seems as if Chinese citizens are treated as superior to Americans when applying for citizenship in Thailand. Obama should mention this on his next visit!

You are right, but you must also surely be aware that Thailand is essentially run by ethic Chinese...

China got a foot in the door with Thailand years ago, it's now just a case of revisiting it's old haunts to reaffirm it's presence, a bit like a dog peeing up a lamp post, just letting the neighbourhood (Americans) know they're still around !!

China is stealthy spreading it's wealth around the pacific region, buying up the bordering nations like Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, soon Myanmar will follow, it's also heavily invested in a future plan on Jeju island south of Korea, reaching south east to the pacific islands such as Papua New Guinea etc. Not to mention buying up vast amounts of land in Australia & mineral mines in Africa.

China is now slowly taking over the entire pacific area in the same way it reached every country in Europe over the last 30 years or so.

China's game plan is simple, it will soon not only be number one in the world it will one way or another own the world!

Interesting concept. Unless the 'home' oil extraction strategy works for the US - it's only chance to bail itself out - China could well be the creeping powerhouse. China swapped gold for debt with the US when the interest was due. Good moves all round but China also is not very stable in quite a few areas right now. It is about to see its housing bubble burst whereas I think the US is floored and rising slowly again. China has very deep roots and a lot of history here as well as the rest of Asia. A lot of forward thinking has helped China, who unlike management by crisis as demonstrated by the US most recently, does not bail out its banks and large conglomerates at the rate the US threw money away. China's car industry is 'humming' whereas the US, despite the bailout of GM, is now about to fail again. China already is negotiating to compete with Rayong and only good will come of that. The visits to the privy council is a real slap in the face for Barry as Wen obviously knows who will run Thailand on the patriarch's passing. But who really knows what's on the agenda? smile.png All very interesting.

Sounds like a reasonable assessment, made me flash back to Japan circa 1980's.
