Hi all

My Thai wife will be applying for a settlement visa next year and she said that she needs to get a police check clearance for her to work in the uk before she can work here,is that true?It costs 1500 baht i think so i would rather have it done while she is in Thailand rather than wait till she comes ove rto the uk only to find out she cant work.Any help would be great

Thanks

Not needed to get a settlement visa for UK.

For work in UK, a National Insurance number will be required by most, if not all, employers and that is issued free of charge with no payment for any police checking.

Only for some specific jobs may the employer ask for a CRB (Criminal records check) report and this fee may be paid by the employer or employee.

Probably easier to apply if it is needed for her chosen employment when she is in UK so it is current.

Everyone who legally works in the UK must have a NI number; whether employed or self employed and regardless of their nationality or immigration status. Even if they don't earn enough to pay NI contributions.

So all employers will require their employees to have one. If the job starts before one is issued employers will use a temporary one based on the employee's date of birth and gender; i.e. dd/mm/yy/M or F.

As said above, for certain jobs, working with children for example, employers will require a CRB check. So if she intends to work in one of these areas it would be a good idea to get a Thai police check before she leaves. Whether this would be acceptable or not depends on the employer.

But for most jobs in the UK a CRB check is not required.

If you wife will be working in a position which requires a CRB, then a Thai police check will be of no use and will not be trusted.

Also, she cannot apply for a CRB check (full or partial), the employer must apply for it with his consent

The first line of your Post makes sense, but having said that, why should a UK CRB check carry any more weight,as it's obvious the newcomer on a settlement Visa is unlikely to have a criminal record in the UK,but may have a criminal record in Thailand. Also it's unlikely in the beginning of the Settlement Visa if there are any records at all,of the Visa holder.

A full CRB check also seeks information from the applicant's country of origin, if I am not mistaken. Just as the last CRB check I underwent turned up a charge I faced in France.
