Hotel group, BMA to push Charm of Bangkok abroad

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Hotels Association (THA) is teaming up with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to promote the capital's charms in international travel marts next year as part of its plan to maintain the city as a major tourism destination.

In major centres including London, Dubai, Seoul, Shanghai and Moscow, the BMA and selected hoteliers based in Bangkok will look for ways to present the attractive aspects of the Thai capital such as shopping, entertainment and nightlife.

THA president Surapong Techa-ruvichit said this was the first time the association had worked with the BMA officially, especially in helping organise trade platforms between local hoteliers and buyers.

It is essential to promote Bangkok in international arenas like Dubai and London. More important, Bangkok collects tax from business operators, so it should help the business sector lure more foreign tourists here, Surapong said.

"The more foreign tourists come to Bangkok, the more tax the city can collect from the business community." He sees no negative internal factors threatening the hospitality business in the coming year.

However, some external factors may present new threats to the industry. One is the troubled economic performance in Europe. Another is climate change, which may result in unpredictable situations.

He said the hotel industry was doing better than it did last year, when the country was hit by the flood crisis.

The average occupancy rate is expected to be 65-70 per cent, an increase of 10-15 percentage points from last year.

During the last two months of this year, room bookings in some major provinces are high.

They should concentrate on spinning less crap about Bangkok and try promoting the real highlights of Thailand which IMO are far away from the Capital. Where I came from Bangkok only ever means one thing to anyone you talk to. Normally if you mention the word you will get a reply like 'Ah, sin city of the world' or 'the place to shag yourself stupid for two weeks'. I've never known anyone to mention the cultural side of things or identify the place in a more positive tone.

Yes and no actually but your statement is not precise enough concerning the destination and does not take into account some external factors that played in favor of Thailand in the last 2 years (Ministry of Tourism doesn't take them into account either)...

Bangkok has indeed suffered but south and north destination have not. Bangkok is used by many tourism as a stop over; to transfer from 1 plane to another or for very short city break after tour of Golden triangle or Kwai river and so on.

Phuket airport numbers are exploding, samui airport arrivals are up as well. Bangkok clashes have played also in favor of other thai destinations

Now, the many clashes in north africa and middle east have actually played in favor of Thailand: Lybia, Egypt and many other than toppled their gvt in the last 2 years were actually very famous and cheap destinations for most europeans....

Those becoming dangerous, the next cheapest and safe destination is... thailand...

So Thailand tourism number did not drop and did increase but that is not because of internal factors in thailand... and not because of a new idea of BMA...

who ever takes on the role of promoting bangers to the world has got to have a good imagination and/or be a good liar , ....i cant think of anything positive to say about the place , it's so dirty, with smog and rubbish filled stinking soi's , a park here and there would'nt go a miss , but everytime there is an area that could be used for the benifit of the ppl of bkk an office block or ugly hotel is built on it,.... it can't hold a candle to the likes of london/paris/rome/florence/barcelona/berlin etc , it could take upto an hour to find somewhere clean enuf to eat if your on foot and longer to find a few meters of clear pavement even enough not to trip over every few mins, finding a public toilet is another challenge as is a police patrol in the evening, or even a place of interest , after youve seen one temple youve seen e'm all, all thats left to catch the eye are some top looking hookers in over priced bars,...no, just give me a clean beach , ...not much to ask is it ?,.......... oh,sorry...seems it is ATM!

Bangkok is really a sh##y place for tourists, but i defy anyone to go to wat prakaew and not be in awe.

The problem is all the other bs in between.

Promoting the charm of Bangkok has to be the hardest single marketing job on earth, and it its virtually impossible for a tourist too access any of the small charms it has anyway.
