luke69
Hi guys After considering Phuket vs Pattaya I'm planning to come to Pattaya for a couple of months to live and have fun starting from January 2013. I've got a couple of questions, I'm very much into windsurfing, where would be a good location in Pattaya to live so that I won't have to travel a lot? Also are the windsurfing locations close to the city centre? Any recommendations for windsurfing clubs, hotels, and places to rent condos would be very much appreciated. thank you
craigt3365
There is a place in Jomtien that seems to be a center for this. Can't miss it, just south of the start of Beach Road. Out of town, there are 2 places that are quite popular in NaJomtien. Big centers there. One is near The View restaurant and the other is just north of that by the Glass House restaurant and the Pinnacle hotel.
Johnsen
Pratamnak in my opinion is where you should be looking to stay. A beautiful area extrememy close to the city yet feels a million miles away from the chaos that can be Pattaya this time of year. There is always a police prescence due to Princess having residence there. You can easily walk to Dongtan beach and then along to Jomtien which is where I see a lot of windsurfers and kite surfers. Have a look on a map but I would be concentrating your efforts around sois 4,5 and 6. Has some really good cheap restaurants also that serve great Thai food. Kwan garden restaurant on soi 5 is hard to beat and at 60 baht for a large Chang 24/7 and free wifi would be a great place to relax after a day windsurfing. Rimmer
Only Pattaya bay is close to the city centre. I have windsurfed in Pattaya Bay many many years ago but would not do so now, too dangerous and not clean wind or water. Side shore wind during the NE monsoon in Jomtien, but further down at Na Jomtien is the best place to get constant clean wind. Kite surfing at Na Jomtien, from the Pinnacles hotel as Craigt3365 says. Spalpeen
Pattaya is a fine place to visit but if you're a serious windsurfer you'll be disappointed. There's very few windy days here. I was out on the sea today and it was flat calm all day.
luke69
Where would you say is a better place?
Spalpeen
Where would you say is a better place? I used to windsurf in strong winds back in Ireland, so I have an eye on the wind all the time. I've been living here for five years now and there are very few days in the year when I would consider it worthwhile to rig a board. There is windsurfing and kitesurfing here - they even have competitions sometimes - but it's mostly tootling around in light to moderate winds. Have a look at the Thai met. office website for typical windspeeds, but these are not windy latitudes. I switched to scuba diving after moving here because it's not weather dependent. That said, if you haven't been to Pattaya before it's well worth a visit. You won't get bored.
LongTimeLurker
The View has a windsurfing centre, a restaurant and a condo next door that it may be possible to rent in. Also on Jomtien beach there's a windsurfing centre, about half way I'd guess, and lots of accommodation choices arond there. Friends who windsurf from the View tell me the winds come about 4 pm. Rimmer
On a good day you can get force 4 around 12 knots out from the Pinnacles in Na Jomtien but as Spalpeen says its not like the Margeret River or the North Shore. I suspect when Spalpeen and I were involved in windurfing he like me would have been using short sinker boards, small sails and water starts, here they seem to use larger boards and sails so that coupled with the lighter weight of the Thais gets them on the plane much earlier. I have never tried kite surfing but have seen them out there so must be something on a good day.

The kites probably catch more wind for being higher above the ground but, goddammit, I'm just too old to start learning new tricks !
FracturedRabbit
Amara Watersports next to The View restaurant is a friendly place with plenty of gear for hire. Once the north east monsoon kicks in (soon) there should be many days of excellent flatwater windsurfing. http://www.watersportspattaya.com/
PaakYai
Hi Luke69, Please check out - www iwindsurf dot asia (sorry I can not post links) My wife and I run one of only a few serious Windsurfing centres in South East Asia Yes the wind is usually light, but our best wind season is Dec - Mar, so you are right on time. There are better places for Windsurfing holidays, so we are more community focused, however we do have yearly visitors who have been coming to hang out with us for over 25 years. The secrets to our success are that we use incredibly good equipment and we enjoy the patronage of truly great people, (windsurfers are like that). If you are in Thailand and it is windy, or if you are curious about creating a Windsurfing Life-style for yourself in Thailand - well, that is what we do... SUP is getting more and more popular for keeping fit and socialising on those light wind days also. Good luck with your adventures, where-ever the wind takes you.. luke69
thanks for all the good info guys. as for places to stay, any pro's and cons of living in Pratumnak / Jomtien / Central Pattaya from your perspective? Thank you again
Spalpeen
thanks for all the good info guys. as for places to stay, any pro's and cons of living in Pratumnak / Jomtien / Central Pattaya from your perspective? Thank you again Depends what you're after. Jomtien is more sedate and family oriented, Pattaya has most of the bars, restaurants, shopping and so on. In general you'll pay more for accommodation near the beach, less as you go further inland. If you're going to be staying for a couple of months you'll need transport, which means hiring a motorbike. Pratumnak is only good if you speak Russian and don't mind getting mugged a lot.
Johnsen
Well said Tomster..... Pull your head in Spalpeen what a ridiculous thing to say.. Lets not talk about the kid who got shot on Jomtien beach during Loy Krathong or the Russian lady visciously stabbed in Jomtien a couple of weeks back.. To say Pratamnak is where you will get mugged a lot is nothing short of disgraceful. Hows the man supposed to make an educated decision Edited December 3, 2012 by Rimmer Inflammatory
luke69
sounds like North Jomtien is the way to go. Any disadvantages of North Jomtien vs other places close to Pattaya?
craigt3365
There are pros and cons to every location. Jomtien is quieter, which some don't like. Some do. Jomtien requires a baht bus change for transportation near Pattaya Tai. So if doing this route on a daily basis...that can get old. Plus, if coming home late, you'll pay 200 Baht (?) or so. Depends on where you'll be spending most of your time. Jomtien has a nice windsurf center. If you live near that, you'll be set. If you are in Pattaya, you'll have to deal with the baht bus to get there. No big deal really, but it's something to consider. Plus, Jomtien can be cheaper than central Pattaya. Either way, you don't really need a scooter unless you really want one.
netcyberg
I have been living in Pattaya since Jul 2012, and started to learn windsurfing since then. At first I never minded if there was a wind or not as I was learning the basics. But now I realize that I only evidenced around 5-8 days of what you can actually call windy days for the past half a year.... And I hardly believe now if there are actually any windy days >12-15knots in this region at all. Does anyone know if Huahin will be the better option this this case for windsurfing? craigt3365
When we lived there, that's the area we stayed. But you do need your own transport, or be willing to walk a bit or deal with the motorcycle taxi drivers. Here's a good map of Jomtien: http://www.thaiwaysm...ap_jomtien.html It's not that big of an area. Top to bottom is maybe 4-5km or so? If you look on that map, you'll see the Surf House. It's right across from the windsurfing center. Jomtien is busier in the North, more quiet in the Southern area. Decent seafood restaurants near the bottom/southern end. Lots of places to stay all up and down the area, as well as inland.

That's possible 365 days a year in Pattaya and the crack on the boat is always good. Well, I might be wrong but its two completely different things. Though I agree its much cooler when your hobby is not a weather dependent. I will give it a thought when I will totally give up waiting for a decent wind suitable for windsurf in Jomtien...and I’m quite there already. Novermber was a waist - no windy days at all. The start of December is flat as well...

netcyberg
BTW if there is anyone who want to blast around at Na Jomtien - I would love to make a company. I ride at Na Jomtien close to Pinnacle resort. And one more thing: I'm looking for a used Formula board to buy. So if anyone has something to offer pls let me know!
