Roads to be blocked for His Majesty's birthday celebrations

BANGKOK: -- Roads around the Royal Plaza, where a government exhibition to mark His Majesty the King's birthday will be held, will be closed to traffic and parking from 6pm on Tuesday to Wednesday night, when the beloved monarch turns 85.

Nine temporary parking lots will be set up for people going to the exhibition, while 600 officers from the Traffic Police and 1,500 from the Metropolitan Police will be deployed at the plaza and its vicinity on Monday night, Pol Maj-General Piya Tawichai, commander of Traffic Police, said yesterday.

Motorists can also park their cars and ride special city buses to the exhibitions at three locations - Rama VIII bridge and bus #700, Pinklao bridge and bus #650, and Yommaraj and Uruphong expressway exit. There will be spaces for 1,650 cars combined.

The nine parking locations and their capacities are Kamphaeng Phet Fifth Road with 100 spaces, Tao Poon cement plant complex with 100, Kamphaeng Phet Second Road with 150, Provincial Police Region 1 compound with 120, Kamphaeng Phet Sixth Road with 700, Buddha Monthol First Road with 550, Ratchaphruek Road with 500, Buddha Monthol Second Road with 700 and Kanchanaphisek Road with 600.

Police will direct traffic and ensure security for His Majesty, who will travel to the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall to make a public appearance on the main balcony at 10am on Wednesday along with the Royal Family.

Police will also do the same for the huge crowds converging at the Royal Plaza, estimated at up to 200,000, as well as keep an eye out for pickpockets, thieves and burglars breaking into cars parked in other areas outside adjacent roads designed for parking during the event.

Extra police would likely to be mobilised, besides support units with officers capable of giving first aid.

On Wednesday, police will guard Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra when she presides over a vigil at 7.19pm at Sanam Luang in honour of His Majesty, he added.
