If I read the majority of the comments on this(or many other)topics I am still astonished that the western world is still alive without the wisdom of the long time "expats/experts" who has left farang land with the generous intention to educate third world Thailand how to do things right...oh my Buddha !! Yes but just more of the wrong people in Phuket, more corrupt and apathetic police here, a hugely more corrupt justice system here and wildly more chance you will get dragged into contact with these scum however much you try not to and however much you keep a low profile. That is the scandal. It is incredibly difficult to extricate yourself and there is absolutely no-one to turn to. As a foreigner in Phuket you will be incredibly fortunate to find an honest lawyer because they are nearly all in on the corruption game in one way or another. They are very happy to screw up your claim and frame it so it is impossible to win if are fortunate to have any money left after the cockroaches have targeted you. Do you think Thai society gives a hoot for a foreigner scammed out of his assets or tourist who has been raped, robbed, scammed or fleeced or murdered. The courts are certainly not making any attempt to clean up society if it means a foreigner will Get justice over a Thai even after proving their deceit and illegal loans. Foreigners are fair game for that . Maybe that sort of tips the balance out of Thailand's favour on this one.

Disagree. To say it is "safer" anywhere else implies there is a concern for the well being of anyone visiting Phuket. Literally millions of tourists enjoy their holidays on the Island every year without getting murdered!

It seems Noddy's experience of the province of Phuket consists of a short visit some time ago to the small sex and party town of Patong. With this vast experience he feels it neccesary to come on to a thread about some poor individuals murder and give tourist safety tips to the many thousands who read this board. He is not alone in this attitude.

As the victim, his murderer, and their dispute, seem to have been imported from Samui perhaps Noddy (Thomas Cooke) will need to update his travel alert.

It is not the million or so who do not get murdered ( but who almost certainly get scammed in one way or another) that you should be concerned about. It is the tens of people who ARE murdered, read and suffer violent attack that should concern you. That is like saying don't bother about air safety if 2-300,000 people died from air travel because millions don't.

I wouldn't say being beaten and stabbed is execution style. Somebody was very angry at this man, this was a up close and personal murder not a detached execution.

PHUKET: Phuket Police tentatively identified the man murdered execution style and left in a rubber plantation on Patong Hill as Hungarian businessman Peter Reisz, 47.

A missing person complaint was filed with the Koh Samui Tourist police stating that Mr Reisz had gone missing from a rented room in Phuket on November 23, Phuket Police Commander Choti Chavaviwat said.

“The man who filed the missing person complaint claimed that Mr Reisz had a business in Koh Samui, but he had fled to Phuket because of a business conflict,” Maj Gen Choti said

“In the missing person report, he claimed that his friend rented a house in Thalang and had last been in touch on November 23,” Maj Gen Choti explained

Police searched Mr Reisz’s rented house in Sri Soonthorn, Thalang and found his passport.

“We are now checking for a match between the DNA collected from the evidence in the room and the the DNA of the body,” Maj Gen Choti said.

“At the moment we believe that the motive for the murder was a business conflict,” he said.

Mr Reusz's friend in Samui has already been contacted and is coming to Phuket to identify the body, as well as his family from Hungary, Maj Gen Choti added.

Why this burning desire amongst some posters to know exactly what was the cause of death of the poor bloke?

Could it be that they see a reflection of themselves and their own lives when reading these reports - losing hair, gaining weight, nobody to report them missing, uncertain age ?

Can people please think about what you hope to acheive by bagging out tourist hot spots as it directly affects those working and living in the region mentioned.

It also has to be realised that many of the journalists writing for ThaiVisa-sourced material are possibly writing English as their second or third language. Writing from notes written in your native tongue to another can always expected to have a few things lost in translation.

Finally, the deaths of people are hard to take by family and friends regardless of circumstances. Using your TV-learned forensic knoweldge to pass on poorly-informed subjective comments is bad form.

The Michelle Smith murder incident was a totally different kettle of fish...the only reason the Thai authorities acted so positively and quickly to this was infact because the victim was there in Phuket on a travel agents fact finding trip funded by TAT....The adverse negative publicity this produced in Australia reached all the way to the highest level of government prompting the Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to personally intervene...This latest incident will hardly raise a blimp on the radar and will quickly be forgotten so it will be 'business as usual' for the upcoming high season..Remember this murder that hit the news here a while back?People quickly forget..just look at how many people still go to Bali after what happened there!

Dead man identified as Hungarian businessman

Police yesterday identified as a Hungarian a man whose body was found in a plastic bag at an isolated rubber plantation on Patong Mountain in Phuket's Kathu district on Friday. He ran a property business in Surat Thani's Koh Samui.

The man, whose face seemed to have been struck with a heavy object, was estimated to have been dead for at least 3-5 days.

Phuket Police Commander Maj-General Chote Chawanwiwat said the deceased, Peter Right, 47, was in the business of renting out apartments in Koh Samui. He left the island for Phuket on November 22 and lost contact with family and friends since November 24.

His compatriots filed a missing complaint on November 24. Police suspected that Right was abducted by an unknown group, tortured and killed between November 25-27 period and the motive might have been business conflict or illegal trade.

Sorry? According to whom? Where does any article state he was killed by hired assassins? The three latest murders of farang men in Phuket that I can think of have been by their own countrymen. Oh course Thais were blamed at first, but then their business partners were found guilty. The Swedish guy that ran from his partners in Pattaya was found dead in Phuket and some lame "news" account that stated he was murdered by a Thai gang. No he was murdered by other Swedes who were his business "partners" that thought he had turned them in to Pattaya police.

Dont do dodgy business deals (particularly property) with other farangs or Thai mafia. (This actually applies anywhere in Thailand.) Then your chances of being killed will be sustantially lessened.

If you also stay off motorbikes when inexperienced, unlicensed, drunk or helmetless, if you don't venture into the surf when unable to swim, and if you don't decide to drink yourself to death at an early age, you will be safer than in virtually any of your home towns.

It's only fair to point out then that Thailand is the most dangerous tourism destination for Britons according to the FCO and insurance companies, also the most dangerous travel destination for Australians and also for Swedes now I believe, according to their respective embassies.

The problem is that most tourists come on holiday to have a good time and warning them of the dangers is only half the battle. We also need to be asking the authorities and the locals to make sure the roads are safe, that unscrupulous or criminal property developers are dealt with, that beaches are properly signposted and with adequate facilities for swimmers and rescue, and the list goes on.

After all, it is their responsibility if they want tourism in the kinds of numbers we are seeing these days.
