PATTAYA:--There should be plenty of safe sex taking place around Pattaya City over the weekend and beyond as the city celebrated World AIDS Day by distributing thousands of free condoms during a Beach Road parade on Saturday afternoon.

World AIDS Day is held every year on 1st December and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988. Thailand has a long way to go to ensure the entire country can learn more about the deadly virus and how to prevent its spread. Official figures show that over half a million people in Thailand are currently HIV positive but the true figure is expected to be much higher as many who have contracted the virus are either unwilling or lacking funds to receive medical assistance or are unaware they have contracted the virus.

In Pattaya, Khun Itipon the Mayor of Pattaya, led the parade which began at the front of Royal Garden Plaza. This year they particularly wanted to raise awareness of the virus to foreign tourists and decided the best way to do this was to apply body paint to semi-naked men and women and as expected it had the desired effect.
