Why Does My Cursor Jump Around When Typing Text?

This happens with both my 2006 Windows XP Toshiba laptop and my 2011 Macbook Pro when typing briskly. I am definitely not accidentally brushing my hands against the textpad. The cursor suddenly jumps, usually in Yahoo Mail or OpenOffice, to another part of the document and then displaces existing text. I can understand that PCs have crappy Gates technology -- but expected better of Macs which generally perform in a far-superior manner.

What could be happening? Any solution? Seems to me that even the best modern computers can't handle rapid text input without throwing a wobbly. And I'm only a 2-finger typist!

My wife had the same problem with her Macbook under Windows 7. The problem was solved after installing Touchpad Blocker. Try it, it's free. It may help.

It's a fault in the touchpad itself I must sent my Sony Vaio notebook 2 time to the repair center because problem comes back simple switch off the touchpad in the system settings and use the mouse

The touchpad sensitivity depends on the persons skin/moisture and can vary a lot.

Try turning off the touchpad and see if the problem persists? If it stops there's plenty of settings for the touchpad within control panel to remove the problem (i.e. reduced the sensitivity, turn off when typing etc etc)

macbook you can uncheck a certain setting that will disable the touchpad when the mouse is present.

For windows, you can try updating the software that the touchpad uses. Or make the touch less sensitive in the touchpad settings.

If lucky and the driver allows it, you can reduce the sensitivity of the touchpad. That helped on one of my laptops, but not on the other (both Acer)

On linux you can disable touchpad while writing (re-enabling it after 2 seconds when writing ends). I suppose these are possible on other systems as well.

I think it is under "Universal Access", not the mouse/trackpad options. I know, weird.

Cutting-out the trackpad when the mouse is in seems to have cured the problem! At least on a Mac; not sure whether Windows xp has such an option but then I'm an Apple convert and ain't goin' back.

Trackpads seem sensitive to even a breeze.
