Hello,

Thanks for all the informative posts, this forum has been really helpful. I had a few questions regarding getting an extension to our 60-day tourist visa for medical reasons. My fiance and I are in Chiang Mai, where she is having extensive dental work done. Our 60-day visa expires on January 14th and we are trying to figure out the best way to extend our stay in Thailand, as the treatment plan turned out to be much more extensive than we originally thought. The most appealing so far is the 90-day extension for medical reasons, and I am having trouble figuring out everything that we would need and if this could even apply to us. We need to be in the area until the end of March. She will be having surgery one or two times every week until the end of March and we need to stay near the Dentist in case infection or other complications arise. I would like to have my visa extended as her caretaker as she comes out of the surgeries under heavy medication and needs care/supervision. Here is what I think I need, please let me know what I am missing and if you think Dental surgery will work for the medical extension.

* TM.7 - Application for Extension of Temporary Stay in the Kingdom

* Passport Photos

* 1900 Baht fee

* Letter from the Dr. explaining why patient is unfit for travel, and also explaining the need for a caretaker.

Thanks!

The doctor's letter must have a specific "end date". In other words -- she is unable to travel until "xx/xx/2013". Also, Immigration will want to see the applicant looking really in bad shape or have a photo of someone in bad condition if a third party is getting the extension.

Merely having a future medical appointment isn't considered grounds for granting a medical extension in Chiang Mai. So, it would really help if the doctor details, in Thai, how she will have surgery 1-2 times weekly and can't travel between surgeries. Also, that the surgeries can't be rescheduled to permit her to do border runs.

If you are working with one of the private dental clinics in CM that cater to foreign clients (like Grace), then they can probably help you.

Also -- be sure the doctor's letter is on letterhead stationary or a form has at least one stamp on it -- more would be better. That would be the stamp of the clinic, hospital and/or medical license.
