Dual Nationality And Uk Passport

Featured Replies

My Thai wife and Thai Step Daughter have now been in the UK nearly 3 years. They both have ILR issued this May 2012.

I would like to know in a simple step by step guide how and what I have to do to get them both a UK passport?

Also Cost and time it takes?

Additional info if required.

Thai Step Daughter is 13 years Arrived in the UK 26th Feb 2010

Thail Wife is 31 years Arrived in the Uk 26th Feb 2010 Also arrived in the UK End of August 2009 on A tourist visa.

Thank you in advance.

Unless the law has changed, ILR dosnt give an automatic right to citezenship, there are certain requirements that must be met, two of these were must be resident in the UK for a minimum 5 years and must be at least 18 years of age....other requirements such as language tests etc are aslo required.

I am pretty sure my wife after 3 years can apply for Dual Nationality which then gives her the right to a UK passport. Not sure about the step daughter. I understand a minor can apply with there parent and be granted at the same time.

Hence why I am asking I would of thought a member here has some experience and knowledge that they can pass on.

Language has been covered in the ILR.

Moved to the apropriate forum.

The spouse of a British citizen does not have to met the standard residency requirement of living in the UK for at least 5 years; but s/he must have been in the UK for at least three years and have no time restriction on their stay; e.g. ILR.

Children under 18 are treated differently. They cannot be naturalised as British but can register as British, essentially the same thing. The requirements they have to meet vary depending upon their age and circumstances.

There are other requirements; full details can be found at British Citizenship Basics.
