TRANG, Jan 2 – The southern province of Trang issued a warning for residents in low-lying areas along the Trang River to brace for a possible flood from continuous downpours and high tides.

Trang Governor Theerayuth Iamtrakul said he was worried about potential flooding, and warned residents to move their belongings to higher ground.

Rainfall since last week has triggered flooding in the provincial seat, with about 15 houses and 32 acres of farmland under water.

About 200 small boats in four districts stayed ashore since Sunday due to rough seas and strong winds.

Amnuay Chantarat, an official of the provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said that tourists travelling to islands on the New Year's holiday have gradually returned from the islands and no one has been left stranded. Those staying on the islands have just arrived and some are foreign tourists.

Seneh Thongsak, chairman of the Khaokob subdistrict Administrative Organisation in Trang’s Huai Yotdistrict said that one tourist attraction, the Le Khao Kob Cave, with stalagmites and stalactites closed for three days due to the high water level, with about two million baht of tourism income lost during the New Year's period.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department said a weak northeast monsoon prevails over the Gulf of Thailand and the southern part of the country bringing less rain with the reduced wind.

Waves 2-3 metres high remain in the lower Gulf. People along the coast should beware of possible high waves inshore.

All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats in the lower Gulf from Surat Thani further South should keep ashore in the following several days. (MCOT online news)
