Just wondering,

I am mechanical but have never owned a Diesel nor a turbo

I have a Dmax 2010 3.0 VGS which I took into the Isuzu dealer for its 40k checkup

This was the big one with valve check etc.

After getting it back while hitting the passing gear it seemed very loud with suction

type noise. I stopped checked what I could see & all seemed fine. So i thought maybe

I just never noticed this before as I had not had the truck long. Maybe 1-2000k

Well 2000km later I again was checking the engine mainly to see

how dirty it had gotten on a recent mountain trip where there was a lot of dusty roads.

At this point I noticed the big hose off the Intercooler/Intake filter to the turbo had oil

around it like it was leaking. So I puller the big plastic shroud ( which I should have done

the first time in hindsight) & see when they did the maintenance & while reassembling

they did not put the hose clamp back. It was still there but down at the bottom.

So I put it back & tightened it up. Now all is fine in passing gear no suction sound.

My question is ....since the large hose was tight enough to stay on but obviously sucking

air do you think any damage may have occurred?

I thought about going back to the dealer & making some noise but I have been here long enough to know

how much good that will do. Instead today I will go to some none dealer like B Quick & get an oil & filter

change as I obviously did loose a little oil. (still within safe limits)

Does anyone know a place in Chiang Mai to get the engine safely spray cleaned?

Also anyone think any damage could have been done?

I am thinking it runs fine & may have been sucking some air but should be fine eh?

Thanks

Based on your description, it sounds possible that the engine was sucking unfiltered air, which can't be good. However, it also sounds like it was only leaking around the hose itself, so you should be lucky enough to not have ingested anything too big.

I would definitely recommend proceeding with an oil change, and and keeping an ear open for any further/future odd sounds.

As for safely cleaning a diesel engine, the only real considerations would be to bag the alternator and the ECU (I know the Isuzu 2.5L has the ECU in the engine bay, assuming that's the case for 3.0L too), and use a respected brand of degreaser that's not going to be too agressive... and of course make sure it's quickly and thoroughly rinsed off as prolonged contact may effect some alloys.

Thanks IMHO that is what I was thinking too.

Same on the engine clean & yes the ECU is up front

standing vertical in its own stand. Does look well sealed.

If I can get someone to just give it a spray wash all is not too bad

under there. I just don't want them soaking the intake/alt etc.

I wish I could just rent the wand for 20 minutes :)

I haven't been up to CNX for a while now, but I have used the Meguiars shop at the super highway end of Kaew Nawarat Road a couple of times in the past, and they didn't seem to have an issue with me getting in and working with/around them nor using my own products, so perhaps they would let you hold the spray gun too ;)

Failing that, you could always buy a cheap 2-3K Baht pressure washer from Makro and DIY it - just make sure you get at least one spare hose when buying, as the cheapies never last...

Were it me, I would take it back and at least let them know (and show them) what happened, particularly if you have an ongoing relationship with them. They may or may not do anything for you, but if no one ever squeaks, they never know they have a problem. Anyone can make a mistake, but they keep a record of who does what for a reason. The same guy makes the same mistake a few times and they’ll straighten him out or get rid of him.

I have had several Isuzus and drive about a 100K a year and have always had great service. I always check the oil and look things over before I leave, and usually all it takes is a hard look at something I don’t like to get it straightened out. It has been my experience that dealer service centers in Thailand really try to do a good job.

It is true what you say & I did consider it before I decided against it.

For me if I had given it a hard look before I left I still would not have seen it without removing the shroud

as I did this last time.

I do not have a relationship with this dealer & only went there because the previous owner did use them for the first two

maintenance checks at 10 & 20k

I may still go back for the 50k check & mention it then but I am a bit reluctant as this was basic work & did

make me wonder if this is not done what else may have been overlooked or not completed properly.

I only went to change oil today at a B Quick place because I had obviously lost a bit due to this hose.

I did not want the hassle of an appointment etc as that dealer is quite busy.

I watched the change & this is basic work so not too worried

Another thing in the back of my mind is the last time given when I dropped the truck at the dealer &

when I was told to pick up I do not really think a proper valve check could have been done.

Although I was charged for it.

There just was not enough time there for the engine to cool properly before the valve check.

I will think it over & decide before my next maintenance check is due though.

Thanks

I had the exact thing happen to me about 3 months ago. Went in for an oil change and look over. When I drove it and tried to pass it had the sucking sound and also no power. I looked under the hood and noticed the hose to the turbo was disconnected. I put it back and never had a problem.

Here is one I got really mad over. I went in for a oil change and the idiot drained the transmission oil. But did not tell anyone. He then changed the oil and gave the truck back to me. I was fuming. I have had more trouble here with mechanics it is awful.

On a side note does anyone know how many KM you can reliable get from a 2.5 diesel. Mine is 5 years old now with 148,000 KM. It runs great. But I have no experience with diesels.

I had 380K on my last 3l before I replaced it and it was still running strong.

Yes agree with Mogandave.

One thing I do know about Diesels is they can do very high mileage

A company I worked for doing their computers once told me their trucks did 500k Miles
