I have the retirement ext + multi-re-entry visa, I always have the 20,000 THB cash when I'm returning from outside the country, it's no big deal for me to get it from my bank before departing Thailand, then I know when I return I have enough cash to cover taxis, hotels, restaurants, shopping. If I'm coming back from a trip to Oz then I'll also have $10,000AUD cash in pristine $100 bills to exchange in BKK. I also carry my Thai bank book that shows a balance in excess of 800,000THB. But In 48 years of entering Thailand I've never once been asked to show money/funds. I think much has to do with one's appearance, if you look smart and well dressed that counts for a lot to Thais, on the otherhand if you look like a destitute they're likely to check you out.
