Village Hopping.

Featured Replies

Anyone else try Village Hopping around thailand? Just going to local villages where you know no one and asking to stay there, sleep there, make friends there? I Love doing it. I know its a bit extreme but it is always so fun. I know you might think it's crazy or maybe dangerous but from the 100+ days that I have done it in Thailand and other countries I think its the best way to travel.

Here is a link to more description on Village Hopping and some stories :)http://www.yourworldyourhome.com/village-hopping-pro/

Anyone gonna try it now?

How would you think if someone rang your doorbell to do this? Would you refuse? During these 100+ days did you compensate them?

1st Paragraph in that link says it all. Far better to go for homestay IMHO.

I would love if someone came to my door and asked to stay. Before doing this I have hosted about 300+ Couch surfers. The only compensation i offered was friendship, that that is all they wanted. They enjoyed having me (how often do you get a foreigner visiting you tiny village, one who speaks a bit of your language and is 100% willing to learn about your culture) and I enjoyed learning from them. I have a hitchhike planed for SE Asia, I plan to only do it by hitchhiking and village hopping, I think in the end I will have learnt a lot, including more khmer, lao, thai and viet, as well as more about buddism and local cultures. What will I have spent - likely very little - but you have to understand that even if I did offer money it would be refused. Hope you guys try it, I've gotten a few others to try it, and they love it!

Hope you guys try it

sure! first thing tomorrow morning i'll start... coffee1.gif

I just read your blog; it is extraordinary. I would say you are truly one in a million. I'm adventurous but I don't think I'd try this. Someone probably will, besides you. I would only hope that not too many try it, or before long you would become pests, annoying every scenic village along the way. Then, like the PA cop, they will escort you to the county line.

Anyway, have fun & keep posting your stories.

A couple of years ago, A German was cycling around the world, and he was was passing through Thailand. He would get the staff at the Amphur to contact the next one and arrange accomodation. Usually with the Nai Amphur. He got here and was struggling to make himself understood. So he asked to speak to a Thai who could speak English. That person chosen was the wife. So he's brought here. My wife says you can talk to my husband. He rather bruskily responded "I have no need to talk to him, I want to talk to you!" So I went back into the house. My wife calls out"Why don't you come help?" I called back. "You heard the arsehol_e, he doesn't want my help." The people who fetched told my wife he had been rude and demanding as soon as he arrived. They just wanted shut of him.

If he did that in my house he would have been out on his ear in a couple of minutes.

Firstly politeness is essential, arrogance is not.

Secondly if he told my wife he had no need to talk to me only to her she would bring him to me anyway.

Thirdly I hare free loading barstewards at the best of times

He would have been given a drink of water and told to drink up, get on his bike and ride away, though not necessarily in those polite terms.
