BANGKOK: -- At least 49 homeless people died on the streets last year, some of them due to HIV-Aids, and the number of people living in Bangkok's public spaces is on the rise, the Issarachon Foundation reported yesterday.

The foundation, which provides assistance to the homeless, especially those with HIV and Aids, found many homeless with symptoms that were sometimes too advanced to treat.

Some of the homeless, for example, had lived with HIV for years, but had no access to the life-saving drugs. Although the country's healthcare schemes are supposed to cover the homeless, the Issarachon Foundation found that they are tacitly being turned away.

The number of homeless in Bangkok's public spaces increased last year to 2,846, including 382 children, up from 2,451 two years ago. Many have lost their homes due to various circumstances while others have run away due to family problems or other reasons.

"Of these people, 690 have had health problems," the foundation said.

The foundation said 362 of the street people were engaged in the sex trade and face a higher risk of sexually-transmitted diseases.

The highest number of homeless squatting in public spaces is 518 in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district, which includes Sanam Luang. Bang Sue comes second, with 263. Others are Chatuchak with 215, Pathum Wan with 202 and Samphanthawong in fifth place with 173.

49 people doesn't seem that many to me, would like to see figures from other countries and would guess this would be quite low....... Although of course this is only the ones known about.

The guy who heads the foundation is also head of the Real Estate Agent Affairs association. It would be in the interest of real estate agents and their client developers to minimize the number of homeless living on the streets of beautiful Bangkok. Just an observation.

High or low - it's a problem.

No doubt, I have actually been homeless for months in my younger days and it suxs. Just surprised by the low numbers.

"The number of homeless in Bangkok's public spaces increased last year to 2,846"

Doesn't seem like such a high number? Thailand has more than enough money to provide housing and welfare even whilst all the corruption is going on. It's sickening to know that there are people dying on the street right next to those siphoning billions out of the tax payer and they don't even seem to care...

Jeremy I am surprised at the numbers at all. Are these so accurate they can actually declare these numbers? Must have been an incredibly efficient census. But I fear these are just a tip of the iceberg if the truth be known. Nonetheless, it is a sad state of affairs when people cannot access medial treatment or shelter. Even more sad when children are involved.

I think 100 times more die on the streets wearing no helmets. A much bigger issue.

Like most things, it depends on one's perspective. Some might say that people choose not to wear helmets but no one chooses to be homeless and without any assistance from the state. (Yes, I'm aware of the fact that some do in fact choose to be homeless or are so as a direct result of their own choices); Some might say, that someone killed because they didn't wear a helmet was a victim of his own stupidity but someone dying from a life on the streets is a victim of others' neglect or failure to act.

They don't know how many people there are living in Bangkok, but, they know how many of them that are homeless ....clap2.gifsmile.png
