BANGKOK :-- Somchai Khunpluem, also known as Kamnan Poh, the corruption and murder convict arrested last week after years on the run, will not be allowed to stay in hospital if it is deemed unnecessary by doctors, the deputy director-general of the Corrections Department said yesterday.

Kobkiat Kasiwiwat said no inmate is allowed to stay in a prison hospital once they have been declared fit by doctors.

Somchai's condition and his status as a local influential figure would be taken into consideration before any newsjsdecision is made on whether he would be transferred to the prison in his home town, Chon Buri, as there was no doctor to take care of him at that facility, Kobkiat said.

Prisoners whose cases have been finalised are eligible for transfer to facilities in their home towns for the convenience of visiting relatives, he said.

Six of Somchai's relatives travelled to Bangkok from Chon Buri to visit him yesterday but were unable to see him as the prison does not allow visits on weekends.

Somchai, 74, had to be placed on a respirator on Friday night.

A corrections officer said yesterday morning that Somchai was conscious and able to talk. He ate boiled rice and an omelette for breakfast. Somchai had requested special meals and refused to accept the food provided by the Corrections Department, the officer said.

Somchai was admitted to the Medical Correctional Institution, the Corrections Department's hospital in Bangkok, on Wednesday night. The veteran politician was arrested earlier that day while on his way back to Chon Buri from a private hospital in Bangkok that he visited regularly while a fugitive. He had been on the run for seven years following corruption and murder convictions.

Pramual Aimpia, a former Democrat MP for Chon Buri, said Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung should stop making personal comments on legal issues related to Somchai's case.

Chalerm on Wednesday said there would be no attempt to take legal action against anyone who may have sheltered Somchai during his seven-year flight from justice, though criminal liability does exist for such an offence. He did not elaborate on the statement.

Central Investigation Bureau commissioner Lt-General Pongpat Chayapan, who led the operation to arrest Somchai, said the Crime Suppression Department was considering whether to investigate people who might have sheltered Somchai during his flight from justice.

I would hope that "his status as a local influential figure" would have a negative effect on the consideration.

Should be of no issue.

This has to be a tough call for Somchai. On one hand play up the sickness angle to try and get lenient treatment. This concept was pioneered by mafia dons in America. After being arrested in the pink of health, they would appear in court in wheel chairs with oxygen masks.....cheesy.gif But this is hamming it up a bit too much.....

"Somchai, 74, had to be placed on a respirator on Friday night."

But if Somchai wants to be moved to some cakewalk prison in Chonburi where he can have lobster each night and skype his sons, he has to be healthy, as the government is claiming that the Chonburi facility has no medical staff....Ahhhhh decisions decisions .......

Yet again we see that power and position come into play for this pond life scum. His status as a local official. The pond life scum has been on the run for a considerable length of time, he has no status apart from that of a convicted a criminal on the run.

So heartbreaking to see that his relatives couldn't visit him , must have been a traumatic experience having to get the drivers to drive them to the nearest 4 star hostelry where they have to rough it for a day or so.Or even worse they had to return to their own homes ( no doubt paid for on the proceeds of less than honorable business deals) .Indeed my heart bleeds for these poor souls, must be hell for them wondering if they might be investigated as to their involvement in aiding and abetting a fugitive from justice.

Oh I forgot this is Thailand the corrupt politicians and their acolytes ned never worry about the posibility of justice catching up with them.

Somchai, 74, had to be placed on a respirator on Friday night.

Oh such a pity that the that the medical staff didn't suffer from amnesia and forget where the respirator was kept and how to operate it.

Unlike like Somchai and his family members who it seems all suffer from selective amnesia and thus they all completely forgot Somchai was sentenced to prison so they didn't let him go out to play for a long time.

Oh, the poor dear, he just can't digest prison food.

Something wrong with the prison air too. :(

How many times over the years was he in need of a respirater,?? strange it happening now, was this an excuse for not eating farmer style meals ???, will he be able to order KFC deliveries ??? This man is not alone, many others should be made to join him, you could have a government run from a prison-and not from abroad, cheesy.gif

I think he may already have made the decision. If you look at pictures of him after his arrest where he's walking OK and smiling in others and then contrast those with him in a wheelchair looking sad and vulnerable clutching a blanket. Of course he could suddenly improve dramatically if the need arises.

Luv the pic. All he needs is a neck brace, then we can call him kamnan Gloria:lol:

There must be a handbook out there for fallen scoundrels that say: make sure you sit on a wheel chair at your court appearance. accessorise as appropriate with neck braces, hospital robe, bandages, drips etc

Blatant commission of a crime, clear list of suspects including the man in the car with him and birthday party guests, but they have to "consider" whether they will do their job. Perhaps they are waiting for "consideration".

IMHO Somchai would do a lot of people a big favour if he were to drop dead as soon as conveniently possible. Having said that, I can't blame him from refusing the prison food, as a sudden "heart attack" would be very unlikely to lead to a CSI style autopsy.

When his family would be some of the main beneficiaries (and I'm not talking about his will) of his death, who to trust to supply his Khao Pad would be a tricky decision.

Yes he will be able to order KFC, pizza also if he wants it, as can anyone (certainly in Bangkok Remand Prison) with someone outside to arrange it. He'll also be able to have ice cream for dessert bought from the prison shop on the visitors side if he wants it.

But would he have enough money? and if so, would he stoop so low as to bribe the guards in to giving him a comfey existence? passifier.gif

Considering his health has taken a rapid decline, he should consider himself fortunate they caught him when they did, and were able to quickly place him in care.

Looks like he has circulation problems too, needing a jacket to keep his hands warm.

Hahaha you are exactly correct. According to the other story about his hospital visits, breathing was not an issue...

" His treatment records at Samitivej Hospital's Srinakarin branch showed he had sought treatment for symptoms related to his nerves, heart, gastrointestinal tracts and eyesight since April 22 last year."

So perhaps the police have done him a great favor by getting him help for his previously unknown respiratory problems.. whistling.gif

I think they are getting carried away hamming it up, or the story about him being on a respirator is using incorrect terminology.

A respirator is used for for forced breathing, with a tube inserted into your throat, for when you are unable to breathe on your own. Such as being in a coma. I sincerely doubt that was the case here, since he seemed quite healthy when first arrested. This sudden arrival of serious health issues perhaps came after consulting with his lawyer ????cheesy.gif

In the US, prison food from KFC would be "cruel and unusual punishment".

I live in the area that he was living with his family members ( I teach his grandson ). Yes he has been a naughty man, but what he and his family have done for this province is excellent. Much better than the Government has or will ever do.Sorry if i'm bias but I live in a nice clean safe family friendly part of Thailand and what I gather by the local people (policemen, teachers, buisness owners ) It's down to his family.

A naughty man! Hmm. Much the same was said about the Kray twins, they was loverly boys, loved their dear old mum, helped old ladies across the road etc etc.

Ok let's start a betting pool, and see how deep your knowledge of Thai politics is. Who thinks he will be locked in a prison

and do some serious time, and who thinks he will be in prison for a couple weeks as a show, and then quietly let out while the

story is killed?? May be hard to track this story, as one of the certainties of life here is that this story will go away.....
