In a society that makes efforts to control or repress public communications at a government level, it's no surprise they think other governments will do the same as they, and that asking will get it done.

And the fact that this is a 'secret' cat so far out of the bag, that the cat has personalized stage lighting, a permanently retired dance pole with it's own engraved legend, great, great, grandchildren, and a 401K retirement account, goes to show shows how ludicrously hypocritical this demand is.

Dudes, yes, prostitution is rife in pretty much every country in the world - its not called "the oldest profession" for nothing - some countries its legalized (those girls pay their taxes and are subject to very stringent health controls) and some its not, however; as stated many times within this forum, Thailand IS known internationally as the hub of sex and there's no point the government trying to deny otherwise.

"It is possible to visit Thailand without ever seeing any sex establishments" - erm...I think not. I had my old mum over for a holiday last year - she went nowhere near Pattaya, Phuket or any of the other centres of notoriety - and every single day she was picking up on the go-go's, massage parlours, karaokes and blo-job bars, and she is not in the slightest bit wise to the ways of the world.

This is the image the country has so suck it up, take it as a spot of free advertising and sit back and watch the loot roll in - as per usual. Making a fuss about this isn't going to help when Thailand is so hypocritical as it seems to be about many things. This isn't about Thai culture as this was done in the USA. Thais can complain if they wish as that's the idea behind free speech but they can't force their views on people in other countries. Remember I only found out about this because Thai officials decided to complain. If you can't stop it just let it go and don't worry about it. I think that's some sort of Buddhist teaching isn't it? Odd that Thais are Buddhist but forget this when it suits them, as is often the case from what I've seen.

I imagine most women in Thailand have not had contact with sex workers. Even if they are lesbian, whore mongering is pretty much a male pursuit. Something about testosterone.... Makes 'em aggressive too !! [ smiley ]

I understand, you are a respectable "Lady" and would never attempt to learn about these things, as they are only for poorer women or those who make a lot of money out of this "disreputable" business that you are obviously too far above to look at. I understand your point of view, as I also had not had a lot of experience with prostitution except and until I went to Thailand to get massages, where I believe there is not one of them who wouldn't do anything for money, and that goes for the rest of this Buddhist culture. If you just kind of opened your eyes to the hypocrisy of this country behind their Buddhist facade, you would see that a form of selling out pervades this culture on every level (or perhaps not with some Buddhist monks). It pervades the US too (my country) and probably it pervades and invades your culture (I'm guessing England) but please do not bury your head in the sand and pretend you don't see what is really just very obvious in every culture--that many women get exploited and the police profit off them while they sell them for low prices, while it's "illegal" but rarely enforced it's basically the case in every culture you just have to stop pretending you are above it all and look at the reality you don't want to face. Though it is far, far smaller there is a not insignificant portion of the industry that caters to women. Moreover, statistically (and logically) it is almost impossible for most women to not have had any contact with sex workers given the sheer numbers and the fact that they are among virtually all socio-economic strata.

Yep. There are an lot of Japanese and Korean women in Bangkok interested in African men. I saw a lot of (not even particularly wealthy) older British and French women in Morocco with very young-and-happy-looking Berber and Maroc men.

Why I love this country

There is prostitution in nearly every country in the world.

It is part of human history and it will not be going away soon.

As to why the Thai government does not try to do something about it???

They are always trying to curb prostitution in a number of ways and means ...but the social conditions are a little overwhelming.

Historically it does not matter if the economy is good or bad..there will exist prostitiution in its many forms.

Look at any country that is considered having a good economy and good social conditions and you will still find prostitution and all that it entials.

If it makes some money for people then that is the incentive and most of what prostitution revolves around.

Take away the money aspect and what you basically have is women and men having sex...something that is going to happen anyhow relevant to the fact that there are now 7 billion people ......resultant of women and men having sex.

The governments of the world can not stop people from having sex so how are you going to stop prostitution when you realise "all" the factors that are involved.

While some aspects of Thai society and the government try to deter prostitution there exists "turning a blind eye" to the whole issue more so than any serious attempts to stop it completley.

And when they do try to stop it their efforts are more or less thawrted in a variety of ways and means while a lot of people fight against the governments efforts to eliminate prostitution because it has become part of the economy of Thailand ( directly and indirectly) attached to tourism and the over all entertainment industry...Thai style.

In the end they try to control it under the category of "entertainment" ..more or less...as it can not be stopped completely without practicing really harsh measures to stop people from participating in the acts of sex, mainly fueled by money and money being the main motivation and what sustains all of what prostitution in Thailand entails.
