The President of the Republic of Lithuania and his wife arrive in Bangkok tonight on a one-day official visit

President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus and his wife arrive in Bangkok tonight (March 1) at 21.30 hrs., for a 1-day official visit to promote trade interaction and cooperation in other fields.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand and Lithuania have established diplomatic relations for 13 years, but bilateral trade is still low. In 2003, the bilateral trade value was recorded at 14.7 million baht, with 12.6 million baht in Thailand’s surplus. Although Lithuania has a population of only 3.5 million, its per capita income is high and it has technological advancement.

The visit of the President of Lithuania is expected to lead to higher trade and greater cooperation in such fields as science and sports. The two countries will also sign an agreement on mutual abolishment of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and official passports and another agreement on investment promotion.

On Thursday, President Valdas Adamkus will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra at Government House before the latter hosts a luncheon in honour of the President and his wife, Madame Alma Adamkiene.

The Lithuanian couple will also be received in audience with His Majesty the King at Klai Kangwol Palace, Hua Hin, at 17.30 hours, after which President Valdas Adamkus will meet chairmen of the Board of Trade of Thailand, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Bankers’ Association, at the InterContinental Hotel where he is residing.

The Lithuanian President has concluded successfully his first official visit to Thailand

President Valdas Adamkus (วัลดัส อดัมคุส) of the Republic of Lithuania and Madame Alma Adamkiene (อัลม่า อดัมเคียน) left Bangkok last night (at 23.55 hrs) after a one-day official visit that has brought about a new height to the relationship between Thailand and Lithuania.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra lauded the visit of the Lithuanian President as historic. He said during the bilateral talk with President Valdas Adamkus yesterday morning that the visit was the first ever made by a Lithuanian leader since the two countries have established diplomatic relations. The visit was also a tribute to His Majesty the King on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of His accession to the Throne. The visit also opened a gateway for closer cooperation in various fields between both sides.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Thaksin thanked Lithuania for its assistance rendered to countries affected by the tsunami. Both leaders discussed prospective cooperation in the fields that Lithuania has the expertise such as science, information and communication technology, medical science, and engineering.

Both sides agreed to engage more in educational development including exchanges of students, experts and joint activities between educational units of both sides. The two countries also agreed to promote greater contacts between their peoples.

Prime Minister Thaksin congratulated Lithuania for its inclusion into the European Union and welcomed Lithuania as a partner in ASEM. Regarding trade relations, Prime Minister Thaksin proposed to President Valdas Adamkus the establishment of a Joint Trade Commission in which their private sectors take a key role.

The same morning, Madame Alma Adamkiene had a separate programme. She visited the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Handicraft Training Centre of the SUPPORT Foundation at Chitralada Villa, before joining President Adamkus at the luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Thaksin and Khunying Pochaman Shinawatra.

The Lithuanian President and his wife were granted an audience with Their Majesties the King and Queen at Klai Kangwol Palace in Hua Hin late in the afternoon, after which they had friendly discussions and dinner with key representatives of the Thai banking, trade and industrial sectors.
