Anyone Familiar With Thai Vegetables For Juicing And/or Smoothies?

Hi,

I recently moved to Phuket, and can't find many veggies that I'm familiar with for juicing. If anyone that does their own juicing here, and knows the properties of various Thai vegetables for making my own juices or smoothies, I'd be appreciative of the information. I also live quite far from any farang friendly markets. The vegetables I usually use are mostly unavailable close to home.

Thanks for your advice!

any of the vegetables will juice, just a different taste.....try them out and use a variety to get the full mineral and vitimin range.the more locally grown the better essence of vitimin in the veggie

Carrots are available everywhere these days as are bananas.

If you could specify which farang veggies you usually use, we could better suggest local alternatives.

I like Bitter melon ( mixed with a bit pineapple ) very much. It's a longish, bright green vegetable, you have to take out the seeds first. Broccoli stems, carrots are also ok.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I can get a few things here but not close to my place. I guess rephrasing and clarifying my original post might be in order. First, I'm talking about vegetables more than fruit. I highly limit the amount of carrots in the mixture because they contain a lot of sugar. I can always find cucumber, carrot, and beans. Sometimes I can find parsley and beetroot, and tumeric. I have difficulty finding kale, spinich, and celery. I used to use romaine lettuce, but it's pretty rare here. Many things I see here are cruciferous vegetables, members of the cabbage family, like broccoli, and chinese cabbage, which I only use in limited quantities mostly because I'm told I need to limit "heat producing" foods (according to Ayurvedic and chinese traditional medicine theories.

The reason I've picked these is because of the nutirients they contain. For instance, Kale has a lot more beta-carotine than carrots.

So my question primarily is driven by my ignorance what Thai veggies contain, and what are especially good for juicing. Knowing their properties as to whether they're heat or cold producing would be a plus.

Thanks again,

OK that's easier to understand and help you on.

Celery: there is a Thai celery that is in all the markets but the stalks are very small and thin, it looks almost like coriander (cilantro) and is usually found near it. If you examine closely you'll see that it is in fact very skinny celery. Should work fine though you'll need to buy many stalks.

Spinach: not here, but I think the Thai vegetable pak kanna should work OK.

No Kale.

Bitter melon (gourd) is excellent for reducing your blood sugar levels!! I haven't tried this in my shakes yet as I would have thought it would make it, well, too bitter.

I've found full sized celery, and cilantro is a good addition. Parsley is available. Things with sugar (fruits) I make into a juice, sticking with Pineapple mixed with coconut water and organic chocolate (a superfood). Pineapple has Bromelain - a powerful anti-inflammitory, coconut water is full of electrolites. I limit carrots, as they are full of sugar. May check out bitter mellon, recommended 2X here, as well as Pak Kanna.

Am open to recipes, but primarily on what properties, or applications each is useful for. There is a plethora of this kind of info in English, but not too much regarding native Thai veggies (and fruits). If it's written in Thai, my reading abilites aren't quite up to the task.

I'm also trying to add superfoods - right now Moringa powder and Spirulina, but my digestion/absorption is compromised, and I need to find something thet will help me break it down in the digestive tract so my body can use it effectively.

Thanks for all your help. All suggestions are accepted,

If you want something to aid your digestion then fermented vegetables and coconut water kefir are excellent!!! I make my own kefir and will be having a go at the fermented vegetables for the first time soon.
