BANGKOK: -- Deputy police chief Pansiri Prapawat said yesterday that additional inquiries conducted at the request of the public prosecutor had found evidence that Prachuap Khiri Khan inspector Pol Lt-Colonel Thirayuth Katemungmee was indeed involved in illegal hunting in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi from November 8-10.

After meeting investigators, Provincial Administration Department head Chuan Sirinanporn and Kaeng Krachan district chief Khajornsak Somboon yesterday, Pansiri said investigation on 12 additional issues showed that Thirayuth had played a role in renting the boat, camping, cooking wildlife and other hunting-related activities. The police officer was previously not indicted in the case.

Pansiri said the investigation report would be submitted to the prosecutor before Friday, adding that the witnesses had been provided with additional security and any threats made would be reported to the police and Phetchaburi governor.

The deputy police chief added that if Thirayuth ends up being indicted, he would be suspended from civil service and police would use the investigation report to launch another severe disciplinary probe.

Pansiri went on to say that the previous police investigator of the case, Pol Lt-Colonel Kollayuth Wongphetch had also been transferred to assist Provincial Police Region 7 and faced a disciplinary probe.

That could be anything. Squirrels, Tigers, Deer, Snake, Feral pigs, wild dogs, Insects.

They could have killed an endangered native species or a pest that should be controlled.

I think the original story said they killed and cooked a mouse deer among other things.

From the scanty reports I have read they definitely killed a mouse deer. This is definitely a protected species in a clearly defined area where hunting is specifically forbidden. I didn't bother looking in the Thai press. There are often more details there.

Unsurprisingly, the focus of the press is on the political implications for this senior police officer.

I reckon someone has seen an opportunity to advance themselves at his expense and thus pressure is being applied. Fear not, police inspectors are not going to see the inside of a prison cell unless they really challenge the system. His career will be put on hold though. That is the punishment. It is like chess. The villagers who fetched and carried for him have no postion in the game so they are instantly checkmated and sent to prison. The police inspector loses a knight thus his position in the game is weakened but he can still play on. Multiple transgressions might see him in more trouble but I really don't know what he have to do to get sent down, probably shoot somebody in front of rolling tv cameras.

Hmm. killing and eating Bambi... That's going to be a career stumbling block as well as delicious nutritious eats.
