thanks to everyone who replied to my original question about what SUV to buy, i've listened to the main

census of opinion and going for the Toyota Fortuna 3.0 D.

My wife and i are looking to do some road trips jomtien to chang mai etc taking our time driving through

the country but not going offroad, would the 2 wd fortuna be ok for these type of trips ?

Again thanks fir everyones help, really appreciate it.

There is much difference between the 3.0L diesel 2WD and 4WD Fortuner other than the 4WD system, HID headlights and 80,000 baht. The 2WD with VSC system should be very capable even on poor roads. If you are not planning any drag races or driving on anything worse than a gravel road the 2WD would be fine.

We have a 4WD Fortuner and it is nice occasionally but the road has to be pretty bad, slippery or steep for the 4WD to make a difference. For example if accelerating out of a slow corner or intersection on a slippery wet road the Tor-sen center diff and 4WD works really well.

If you go for the 2WD, you might want to check how good the Halogen lights are if you are going to drive at night. Good lights are critical if you will be driving upcountry at night with the motorbikes / tractors etc with no lights. Even with HID lights the visibility distance on low beam in traffic is not great.

Ketherin, did you get the 2013 2WD 3L Fortuner? If so, any feedback?

To anyone who's treaded the new Toyo path lately, below is round 2 email from agent last night (Google Translate). Haven't had a reclama session yet, but would appreciate a quick review, and any other items I might shoot for. FYI, this is my first new car. Ever.

FORTUNER 3.0V A / T 2WD Navi
1,372,000 car (same as Toyo LOS website).
9,200 registration fee.
Deposits red 2000 (I assume this is for the red plates, Mrs. said we get this back later?).
1,383,200. total to pay on delivery. <deleted>!
1zgarz5.gif burp.gif

The list of extras.
First class insurance.
Act.

3M film cars around 60% to 40% full.
Rug. (Floor mats I reckon)
Insulator (Not sure yet. Rust proofing under carriage?
ผ้ายาง )
Frame. (The all important license plate frame I keep reading about.)
4 door awning. (Assume those wind blocking things over the door frame tops)
3 year 100,000 kilometer warranty.
Free 6-of-term labor. (?)
Hero servuce help emergency 24.

Need to remember that English manual too, note to self. Did get a spec sheet attachment with above, naturally in Thai.

Thanks, regards,

J

3 yrs warranty is standard, so no "freebie" there. Insurance is the same. In the end, you do not get much for buying from them...

See what you might ask more in accessories here: http://www.toyota.co.th/en/product-detail.php?model=fortuner&opt=accessories&se=21

Ask also for a waiver of the registration free.

Thanks very much for the look, and the link.

Do you know if the under carriage anti-rust is already applied or something you need to ask for. Seem to recall reading on here somewhere it's an extra but don't remember where/if I saw that.

In general it is an extra... And part of the negotiation. It requires thereafter a visit every three months to make sure the anti-rust is ok (about 700 THB each time).

Anybody else have any observations, love to read as I'm prepping the email response to agent:

1) Under carriage rust protection

2) Free oil change and servicing for X period.

3) No 9,000 registration fee

English lang owner's manual.

Jay, We bought a Fortuner in 2011 when the Flood crisis was still in full swing so we were lucky to get the car little loan free extras. You are lucky the Fortuner supply situation is better now, so free registration and insurance and a few extras should be feasible. Don't expect to much in value though, and you may need to go to a few dealers to get the best deal. What delivery time is Toyota offering?

Labour for services is usually free for the warranty period but the dealers probably will not offer free oil and parts, it's better to control these yourself anyway.

Some of the accessories Toyota offer are pretty lame or tacky, at least for me. Couple of things to note, the Fortuner has chunky A Pillars so if you get dark film on the side windows and dark plastic wind deflectors, you also get a big blind spot. You might want to be specific about the brand of window film to avoid the cheap stuff. I did not realise when we bought our car but read on TV since Toyota offered a Tyre Pressure monitoring system. Considering the punctures we get, TMS might be worth a try if it is still available.

If you run out of ideas for extras you can always try for some additional fuel allowance. Thai dealers are good at delivering new cars with just a sniff of fuel in the tank.

When I picked up my new Isuzu I drove to the station and put in just over 65 litres. I have been no where close to that since, and a few times my gage has been as low as it will go.

Check you are getting 1st class insurance most Toyota dealers were not giving when vehicle over 1ml. Also why rust proof all the vehicles are sealed at factory if it rust's in 10 years I'd be surprised.

700 Baht every three months for 10 minute check up job which can be done while draining the oil ?

Are we back in Europe or what ?

Thanks everyone for responses, all seems to be falling in-line with what you guys are saying. I appreciate the info and assistance... for $42 grand or thereabouts, I ain't to proud to ask.

Just returned from bank, didn't do the deposit transfer as Mrs. got a call from another BKK agent (referred by her niece) with a better offer, waiting on the draft offer by email now. You all are right, no reduction in standard unit price, this new agent has agreed to pay some of the registration fee, canxed the red plate 2,000 deposit, added fuel and some other stuff, and a longer list of bits and bobs than the first agent.

Be playing the two offers against each other by this evening. If anyone's interested, I'll post the final cut so you can see how it panned out.

Thanks again and best regards,

Jay

Yeah, I know, but that's what she wanted and there's one available this moment.

I liked the dark steel mica myself, at least on the Toyo website.

I got exactly the same deal as above, was quite ok with it and i didnt wanted to get a car from BKK as i live near Pattaya myself.

Ordered and got the car delivered within 14 days. Got the white pearl color but even considered to go with a black one as well, it doesnt look that bad on a Fortuner.

Was thinking around 30k so your post was useful, thanks. We are coming from Korat > BKK to pick up the truck so for me, it's worth a few coins extra for them to do all the admin bits in advance so we can just drive off the lot and be on our way. Will do rate shopping next year when the time comes though. thumbsup.gif
