Iphone 5 Battery Issue, Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I just got my Iphone 5 a couple days ago, and I'm getting around 3.36 usage and 9.29 standby with light / med usage. ( more towards light). I went to true shop asking if its normal, he said yes (<deleted>),I've used iPhones before so I definitely know this is not normal. Anyone experiencing the same problem? And anyone got a replacement from true? How was it? Thanks in advance.

It doesn't seem normal compared to mine.

I typically charge mine once every two days. On average my usage will be around 4-5hrs and standby around 36hrs. I would class myself as a light/med user.

Yes. Same.

If I'm using data (3G) for heavy use - surfing/imessaging/etc with screen bright (in sunlight) I can run it to almost done in about 3 hours without location services on.

I've just come to assume that's normal and plan accordingly - car charger always there, battery booster when travelling etc.

It's lame, but I like the phone so I kinda put up with it. I hope apple will work hard to address it in future.

Turning off 'location services' helps to extend the life.

Having locations services on shouldn't really affect the battery only when that app access the GPS and if course if a app requests it them you are looking to use it but try going into location services and turn off everything under system services as you defo don't need them on

What iOS are you running? The latest is iOS 6.1.2 which apparently fixed battery drain issues.

My battery life on 6.1.2 has been horrible. When I first got the iPhone 5, I could go 2 days no problem. Now I am lucky if it lasts through the day, and it's developed into a real problem.

I think the OS is buggy, plain and simple.

The best theory I've read so far is that it has to do with the apps you have installed. Some of them are pigs and run in the background, for up to 10 minutes after you have shut them off. I am currently considering jailbreaking so I can get that tool that kills all background processes.

On my phone right now, usage data is a giveaway - usage is WAY more than the time I spend actually using the phone. It claims I've used it for 5 out of 12 hours, for example. So I think it's some app(s) running amok, and a buggy OS not preventing said apps from running amok.

Jailbreaking will not give you apps to kill background apps only but will also give you apps to determine which apps might cause the battery drain. Further more you will learn about which daemons (hidden background applications) are not necessary for you and how to delete them.

I was looking for that... which jailbreak apps would provide me with battery usage stats? Or CPU usage, or time running in the background, anything like that.

Thanks - I guess I'd like some tips on actual apps though, I mean yeah that website is full of information, need to filter that a bit.

No need to be shy about it, jailbreaking is not illegal. In fact in the USA the FCC has explicitly ruled it legal.

Googling around I've found BattSaver which looks like the ticket, but unfortunately not yet on iOS 6. So I'll have to wait for that.

And BatteryLogger Plus, which is what I am hoping for. Just completed the Jailbreak, evasi0n really makes this easier than it ever was, and unlike previous tools it has a nice UI and lets you know what's happening.

If you want to JB your device now is the time to do it, the latest iOS 6.1.3 beta closes the evasi0n hole. Or holes.

Edit: Good news, BattSaver actually does work on iOS 6. It's $3.99, let's see if it can fix iOS 6 battery issues.

At the risk of going off optic too far here - what are the associated risks of jail breaking an iPhone these days? I've always been reluctant as I heard updates stop working etc... Is it now considered safe?

Posted (edited)

Updates can remove the jailbreak, but that's all. Of course things can go wrong but the JBs are pretty good these days.

Unlocking is dangerous as that screws around with the baseband (low level firmware) and that can cause unexpected issues. So don't do that, buy an unlocked phone instead.

BattSaver (nice name by the way) seems to work pretty well but need to give it some more time to fully test it. In "normal" mode it's too aggressive and basically turns on data only every 15 minutes when the phone is sleeping. That means things like instant messaging don't work properly (15 min delay). Going to run in light mode tomorrow - this gets normal notifications but cleverly turns off 3G when the phone is off.

Because they are disabled in the jailbreak to prevent you losing your jailbreak.

Ok, now I understand - thx.

So, what's the current wisdom - is it safe/worth it? I've always been reluctant, but I'm interested.

It would be good to extend the battery life and perhaps also gain access to some cool/new/free stuff!

With the latest jailbreaking software it's easier than ever. Connect your iPhone, run the JB program, click an icon on your phone and you're done. 3 minutes in all. If you don't like it, simply restore with the help of iTunes. Keep in mind that jailbreaking is different from unlocking. The latter can damage the functionality of the radios.

Well after 2 days with it BattSaver works but it's not 100% smooth. Sometimes it prevents notifications - which it shouldn't. Sometimes it's slow to switch from EDGE back to 3G so I open the phone and access the internet with EDGE which is painful. And you need to turn it off at times, for example I wanted to update my apps - well in order to do that I need the radios - WIFI - to remain enabled while the phone is shut off.

It's nice to have the option to use it though. It definitely saves battery.

6.1.2 is an absolute joke man, restored the phone 3 or 4 times to see if that was causing shockin battery but even without 1 app installed the battery is still crap, worst of any other Ios version before

This 6.1.2 is doing my head in, iv noticed that the usage time and standby time on my phone are the same, iv done a full restore and set the phone up as new with no apps on at all and let it sit there for 1 hr and still it tells me the usage time is 59mins and standby is 59mins, so something is still working in the background from a fresh restore!

Anybody else have this problem on 6.1.2?

Posted

^^ definitely having this problem.

BattSaver works, but I uninstalled it again - too many compromises. It's buggy - it doesnt' turn 3G back on, or leaves cellular data just on OFF, or bluetooth etc. Happened 2 or 3 times, then I gave up.

So back to the bad battery life, I now have background apps killer, maybe that will help.

6.1.2 is the worst release yet as far as battery is concerned. At least for me. I suppose it depends on installed apps and usage patterns.

Try Smart3G.

I think methods above would somehow help. However, battery of Iphone is just 1450 MAH which naturally does not last long for 3G usage. With social media applications on such as facebook, line, whatsapp, youtube, etc., you will always face this issue untial Apple improves battery capacity. Do consider to have a power bank to help so you can recharge anytime anywhere and you will not run out of battery during rush our.
