"retirement Visa' Cancellation?

Featured Replies

Probably a silly question but....is a current 'retirement' visa cancelled if I leave the country, without a reentry stamp.

I was thanking about the position where a holder of a 'retirement' visa exits the country and then reenters with a 'free' tourist visa. If the 'retirement 'visa is not cancelled, then the guy could stay until the 'retirement visa is due to be renewed.

In effect there would be no need to obtain a reentry permit and thus save 1900 baht.

I am sure that such action would not be "on" but would like to know the official position.

It's not a visa, it's an extension of the permission to stay, any permission to stay is invalid after departure without the re-entry permit. Also the free entry, isn't a Tourist Visa, it is a visa exempt entry.

Indeed ^^^, if it's an extension from immigration then a re-entry permit is required, if it's a visa from a consulate outside Thailand (and has validity / entries remaining) then a re-entry permit is not required.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

And a re-entry permit costs 1,000 baht (not 1,900 baht).

I think you and I are on the same page Lop, if in doubt I check up well in advance. We both know the Thai immigration changes the rules beteween their officers but if we play their game and don't buck their system a retirement visa here is so easy. Same as re entering Thailand, pay your 1,000 baht and move on. We can always pay for multi entry if we leave Thailand regularly and return. I've been here over 10 years now, no real problems just a few hiccups. which were fixed immediately. Cheers.

Not trying to throw a spanner in the works here. It'a point that a few of us have discussed but I'm/we still not certain.

Reasons I'm asking.

My wife works, I don't, her job requires trips outside Thailand regularly, we go together and my O multiple is what I use. I don't have to go to Imm' locally every 90 days because it's an O multiple.

So, I qualify for retirement and get an extension of stay meaning 90 day reports and I get a re-entry permit (multiple) , my wife continues working and I travell with her and "report' to Imm' every time I/we arrive back in Thailand, ie at the airport, could be every 8 or 9 weeks.

Do I still have an obligation to go to Thai Imm' here in Thailand every 90 days ?

90 days after each arrival if you do not depart in the meantime. You only have to report if you actually stay longer than 90 days without an exit. And each entry is day one of a new 90 day count. So if you leave every 8 or 10 weeks you would never have to report using TM47.

No you only have to go when you are in Thailand for 90 days.

You say you are on a retirement visa. It may not be relevant but a marriage visa needs less money in the bank or less income but is more work to get.

I agree that you do have to produce a good few documents etc. But on the other hand my wife studied abroad and had to go through the same process and has said to me that what they require in Thailand is really no different from Oz or Kiwi land, so neither of us have a problem with ith it. Shame the uk don't do the same.

Actually it is quite a lot different for a male as those with marriage have easy access to residence in most - that is not the case with Thailand unless a male is employed there for an extended period of time and during that time he must present financial ability that would not be required from most other countries for a foreign national married there nationals. For a student visa/stay yes; but not for marriage.

Agree, my wife told me that quite often they, ie authorities would check the circumstances, with her Aunt, ie, are your two neices still staying with you and still studying including photographs etc etc. Probably more checks than we have in Thailand.
