Herald Tribune to be renamed International New York Times

NEW YORK: -- One of the most prestigious names in world journalism is about to change, the International Herald Tribune is to be rebranded as the International New York Times, The New York Times company announced Monday.

Arthur Sulzberger Jr, chairman of the company said the move was a"logical next step to extend our international reach." "The digital revolution has turned The New York Times from being a great American newspaper to becoming one of the world’s best-known news providers," said Mark Thompson, the former BBC chief installed last year as President and chief executive of The New York Times Company in a bid to capitalize on the paper’s global audience. "We want to exploit that opportunity to attract international audiences, digital subscriptions and advertisers." The International Herald Tribune had been co-owned by The New York Times and Washington Post from 1991 to 2003 after which The Times bought out the Washington Post’s stake.

News of the rebranding came just days after the company said it was exploring options to sell its sake in The Boston Globe to focus on its core business.

Haven't picked up one of those in 20 years or so, but sad to see such an iconic piece of nostalgia go away. Who can forget college trips abroad and the only English news you could get of home was an IHT, and it used to be the craigslist for expats long before there was any internet.

IHT has been a version NYT for years, just about every story in IHT can be found in the NYT.

My guess is they don't want to have to maintain a separate website.

NYC used to have a daily newspaper called the NY Herald Tribine. This ceased to exist decades ago.

The IHT was much more popular before online info came into be. For many of us who wandered in days of yore the IHT was our link to what was going on in the rest of the world, even if the copy we stumbled upon was months old.

Not quite sure why my comment got removed - perhaps someone isn't aware that the IHT classifieds perpetuated probably one of the original and longest chain mails ever:

It went along the lines of pray to St. Jude and if your prayers were answered, you must publish your thanks three times. You would rarely find an IHT that didn't have such a classified in it.

Speaking of sinners... remember all those "high class" hooker ads and ads by jet set playboys? The guys would be men of mystery looking for their muse to accompany them on their around the world tours, and the women would all have art history Degrees but were looking for "generous" (older) male companions. laugh.png
