Conversation Only(People Asking For)

Featured Replies

I live in a country town and people are ashing me to teach them basic conversation.

Up to now I have been sending them away but I wonder is there any way I can help them

deal with their English speaking costumers without grammar or writing.

If they could read could I give them a crash course for a few months to get them going.

Most of them work in hotels, restaurants and Tea factory offices.

Is there an ESP book written for this or would I have to start with basic grammar.

Thanks

I have done this conversation thing quite a few times. I use essential grammar in use or English grammar in use by Raymond Murphy. Not so much to hammer grammar into the student(s) but to use as a basis for conversation and develop dialogues. The students I have had were professional types who could read and were good at grammar, they just could not speak more than two words.

You could use "Rosetta Stone". I'm pretty sure that most of them do have a Pc or notebook. Forget the Grammar teaching part for now.

They need to learn vocabulary first. You'll have to start with basic English I you, he, she we, they

Try to teach them words they need to communicate. Greetings, how to say hello, feelings, numbers, etc.

make sure they understand you,as it's part of Thai culture, that they say they do, but didn't get it. There're also many free websites to learn English.

Best way is learning by doing. Don't waste your time trying to teach grammar rules. Good luck, it's worth doing it.--wai2.gif

The thing is that they don't want grammar.I would loose the students if I thought grammar.

All I can do is teach them vocabulary and set sentences.

i saw a book called EVERYDAY ENGLISH FOR HOSPITALITY PROFESSIONALS on Amazon.

If I thought them this they would go off and speak what i call Thailish(English with Thai grammar).

Which most people in the tourist industry in Thailand speak 'awleady' and is quite functional

I'm trying to decide whether this would work or is it totally unprofessional.

I could teach this book over and over and people could come for 6 months or so and leave when they don't want to start the book again.
