Retirement Visa

Featured Replies

I am planning to retire soon to Thailand , I have been told that now as of this year that you can bring your car from the UK as long as you have owned it for longer than 2 years , and will not be subject to crazy import costs , can anyone clarify this

I think that you have been misinformed. In the past returning Thai citizens who had owned a vehicle abroad for more than 1 year were able to bring it back with minimal tax. But I believe that even that is no longer available.

Stand to be corrected by those more knowledgeable of course.

Can I make it clear I am not a Thai citizen I am British , I have only heard this recently I know that you can take Furnishings ect., if you so wish within 6 months of aquiring the retirement visa with out incurring a tax bill, but that it has been extended now to you car

Nope you,ll pay through the nose and probably a pound of flesh too.

There's also a lot of rules re "furnishings" etc especially related to electrical appliances.

And of course there'll be the usual "special tax" to pay to ensure a smooth customs clearance!

You have been misinformed both on the issue of the car and on household goods. Neither can be imported tax free on a retirement visa/extension.

Here's a thought for an adventure -- what if you drove your car from the U.K to Thailand?

Seriously -- this is one reason Hubby and I thought about retiring to a South American country. We figured we'd have a nice adventure driving our beloved Prius to our new retirement home from the northern reaches of Michigan.

I do not have KKC info on extension of visa based on retirement as to combination method. US Embassy letter accepted for 65K income straightforward. They were particular about proof of residence: Copy of blue book page of owner and copy of one year lease.
