Is It Possible To Extend Visa In Chiang Mai?

Featured Replies

Hi, I read some blog posts about the possibilty of extending a visa at the consulate in Chiang Mai, in stead of doing a visa run. We will be entering Thailand on a 90-day visa obtained in Hanoi, and we will stay in Chiang Mai for a long time because we will be having our baby there.

For that reason, we don't want to do a visa run after 90 days, because we don't know in what condition the mother and baby will be in. If we could extend our visa in Chiang Mai, preferably for another 90 days, this would be perfect for us.

I'm not sure if this is really possible though, because why else would so many people from Chiang Mai travel all the way to Vientiene to get a extension?

I hope anyone here can confirm the possibity of extending a visa in Chiang Mai!

A tourist visa entry is normally only 60 days so not sure what visa you are calling 90 days from Hanoi. But any extension beyond 90 days would require medical reasons as it would not be allowed for tourist stay. Extensions would require a visit to immigration office at airport entry area and cost 1,900 baht regardless of length of stay. For medical reasons suspect they may only allow 30 days at a time and will require doctor certificate of such and may require medical exam by immigration doctor.

You need to get your language correct on your situation. Do you have a 90 day non-o visa or is it a 60 day tourist visa. The tourist visa can be extended for 30 days after the 60 days allowed upon entry. To extend a visa one needs to go to the immigration office, which is on the way to the airport pass the big shopping center. You do not go to your consulate to extend a visa in Thailand but to immigration. As stated above there are extensions for medical reasons but for only 30 days and you will need a Drs. certificate, your wife could qualify for this but do not think you will. It appears a visa run to laos is in the cards for you.

You need to look at what you have and exactly what it gives you to make intelligent decisions

So it isn't possible to get a 90-day visa anymore? This is odd, we've had one before and if I would obtain a visa from our own country (The Netherlands) the 90-day visa is still available.

But you guys are saying we won't get a 90-day in Hanoi?

So you believe that extending a visa is only possible when you have a medical reason? Since when has this changed then, because I've read several blogs from people explaining how easy it is to extend your visa at the immigration in Chiang Mai. So you're 100% sure it's only available when you have a medical reason now?

The only visa good for a 90 day stay is a non immigrant visa. Visas are not extended only the permit to stay you get from a visa is extended.

IE: a category O visa for retirement, visiting family and etc or a B for business purposes.

To extend a 90 day entry from this visa could be possible for medical reasons for a max of 90 days (according to rules) each time but might well be less.

Any other extension would be for one year.

Some people do refer to a tourist visa as 90 days but in reality it is only good for a 60 day entry and then a 30 day extension.

Nobody says you cannot get a new visa in Hanoi. But you do not give enough information to give you proper advise.

What kind of visa do you have from Hanoi and if it is a non-immirgant visa what is it based upon. That determines your possibilities.

A tourist visa is for 60 days and can only be extended by 30 days A non-immigrant visa is good for 90 days and can only be extended if you meet certain criterias (like being married to a Thai, or working) and additional qualifications.

Based on the information you have provided sofar the only thing that can be said is that you could get an extension based on medical reasons.

Looks like the OP wandered off, but if he returns perhaps he can answer the very valid questions posted by those who responded.

Meanwhile, let me add my (probably unread) input -- it's possible to get a medical extension in CM, also and one for the caregiver, as well. Presumably the caregiver would be the OP.

Many NGO and charity workers from the region come to CM to give birth. The Raintree Center, part of the Chiang Mai Christian Church is a good source of info for people in this situation. (Dr. Google is your friend to locate these resources.)

Now, to answer the OP's question about "why else would so many people from Chiang Mai travel all the way to Vientiene to get a extension?" It's because they want to remain in Thailand long term -- longer than the tricks one can play to extend a triple-entry tourist visa into a stay of, what? 9 months (don't know for sure). The CM foreign residents who come to CM either didn't have the forsight to apply for the correct visa in the western world and now they have to deal with a closeby embassy who isn't as liberal or they really should be here on long-term marriage or retirement extensions but don't meet the financial qualifications.

In reality of course you do not get extensions in Vientiane you can get visas there but certainly not extensions. Those are only obtained at Thai immigration offices.
