I read over the Thai personal Income tax. The one thing that is sticking out is the 180 day residence classification. Reading it literally, it says I would then be taxed on all my income, even income earned outside of Thailand. This seems to be a problem if I teach in Thailand more than 180 days a year which is what I want to do.

I am a USA citizen and I have a lot of Dividend and Interest and other Investment income from the USA. I report and pay all that properly via the US tax system. Some of it is Tax free (USA municipal bonds) some of it is from qualified dividends that get taxed at max rate of 15 % etc. I can't imagine Thailand expecting me, a USA citizen, granted working in Thailand for more than 180 days, to start reporting or paying Thai taxes on those monies!?

Have any of you encountered this or do you just interpret the Thai Tax resident/non-resident to make no difference and you just report to Thailand your monies earned from teaching in Thailand?

Thank you.

There is a dual-tax treaty between Thailand and the US which has always been around but came into formal status when President Clinton signed off on it when he visited here years ago.

I taught for over 14 years here in Thailand and kept my Thai monies separate from my US monies. I had to pay taxes on my US income but not on my Thai income of which taxes were paid here in Thailand by the university.

I am aware of the treaties and of the US Income tax foreign Income tax exclusion and how the Thai wages would be reported. I am asking specifically about how anybody has handled the part of the Thai Tax law that says after 180 days you are a Thai resident and ALL income must be reported.

Did you report your Thai income to the USA and did you fill out the relevent US tax forms that can give you the appropriate Income exclusion and/or tax credits? Or did you just put the Thai income on the Thai tax forms and just the US income on the US tax forms?
