Canadian Visa

Featured Replies

My (Thai) wife and I will be in Niagra Falls, NY in May and we would like to cross over to the Canadian side for a few hours. Does she need a visa to cross over for the day? If so how difficult is it to get a visa for Canada?

It depends upon your wife's visa status. If a permanent resident she would not need a visa.

United States citizens and permanent residents: You do not need a visa to visit or transit in Canada if you are a United States citizen or a person lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who is in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence.

Otherwise she will need to get a visa.

Above response correct. My Thai wife has her alien registration ("green") card. We took the same trip that you are planning over to the Canadian side of Niagra Falls. We were able to cross and cross back without her having a Canadian visa.

We have also travelled to Mexico without her needing a visa.

But don't forget your passports. :)

Thanks for the replies. She doesn't have a green card and neither does her sister and niece who will be with us. Guess we will see the falls from the US side.

That's sad, as the view from the Canadian side is much better. And, the area is much nicer than the US side. I believe you can do "The maid of the mist" boat ride from either side - a bit touristy but fun and worth doing once anyway. Have fun.
