I found the above in a dictionary but not quite satisfied.

Any other words to be used?

That looks like a calca to me. Using the rule of thumb that นิยม is used in constructing nouns, ending with -ism. I'd rather try to make an extended translation like ความเชื่อในสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ or การบุชาสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ That would be much clearer and more understandable for a regular Thai-speaking person.
